Why Kansas City Chiefs will make the playoffs: A clear sign emerges despite 5-4 record and tough schedule

For the first time in years, the Kansas City Chiefs look mortal. Sitting at 5-4 heading into Week 11, Patrick Mahomes and company have drawn criticism for offensive inconsistency, missed opportunities, and a lack of the invincibility that once defined their reign.

But beneath the frustration lies a strangely reassuring truth – one that history suggests might point toward another Super Bowl run.

In each of the past three seasons in which Kansas City lost to the Buffalo Bills, the team went on to reach the Super Bowl.

It’s an almost unbelievable coincidence – but one that Chiefs fans are starting to treat as a reliable omen. And after their Week 9 loss to Josh Allen and the Bills, history might just be repeating itself.

History on Kansas City’s side

The pattern dates back to the Chiefs‘ modern dynasty run. In 2020, Kansas City lost to Buffalo in the regular season before going on to play in Super Bowl LV.

The same occurred in 2022, 2023 and 2024 – each time, Andy Reid‘s team bounced back from a mid-season defeat to the Bills to storm through the playoffs.

This season, the Bills handed Mahomes one of his rare home losses at Arrowhead Stadium, winning 28-21.

But instead of treating the setback as a red flag, fans and analysts are pointing to it as a familiar sign. If the pattern holds, Kansas City could again be gearing up for a late-season charge that culminates on football’s biggest stage.

What gives this theory even more weight is how eerily similar this year’s situation feels to those previous runs. The Chiefs have struggled with dropped passes, communication breakdowns, and red-zone inefficiency.

Those were the same issues that plagued them during mid-season slumps in 2022 and 2023. And both times, they corrected course just in time for the postseason.

A forgiving finish ahead

The Chiefs‘ remaining schedule also offers reasons for optimism.

With games still to come against the Las Vegas Raiders, Houston Texans, and Tennessee Titans, Kansas City has opportunities to regain momentum before a tough final stretch.

Defensively, Chris Jones and Trent McDuffie continue to anchor one of the league’s top units.

Whether it’s superstition or statistical coincidence, Kansas City‘s track record after losing to the Bills can’t be ignored. Every time they’ve stumbled against Buffalo, they’ve finished the season playing for a championship.

At 5-4, the margin for error is smaller than usual, and the Chiefs will need to rediscover their offensive rhythm fast. But if recent history is any guide, the Week 9 loss might have been the spark that sets up yet another deep postseason run.

For Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, the road may look rough now – but when this franchise has been here before, it’s always ended in February football.
