Why LeBron James isn’t playing for the Lakers vs Knicks today

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was ruled out for Sunday’s home matchup against the New York Knicks, marking the second consecutive game the veteran forward has missed due to injury management. The four-time MVP had already sat out Friday’s victory over the Indiana Pacers, and the Los Angeles Lakers initially hoped he might return to the court against the New York Knicks.

However, the team ultimately ruled him out a little more than an hour before tipoff as he continues to deal with a bruised left elbow and ongoing left foot arthritis.

The elbow injury occurred during Thursday’s road loss to the Denver Nuggets. During that game, LeBron James fell awkwardly after mid-air contact from Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic while attempting a layup late in the fourth quarter.

The basket cut the Los Angeles Lakers deficit to 110-106 with just over four minutes remaining, but the collision clearly caused discomfort.

After the game at Ball Arena, LeBron was seen icing his elbow while speaking with reporters in the visiting locker room.

The injury forced him to briefly exit the game, and he was not on the floor for the final 20 seconds of the loss to the Denver Nuggets.

“It felt like one of those funny bone situations,” James said Thursday. “But like, super more intense.”

Lakers abort plan after double injury

The elbow contusion was significant enough that the Lakers listed James as questionable heading into Sunday’s contest against the New York Knicks.

The original plan was for the 41-year-old to go through pregame warmups before the team made a final determination on his availability.

Instead, the medical staff opted for caution and ruled him out before the players even stepped onto the court.

The absence is not entirely unusual this season. The Lakers have repeatedly listed James on injury reports for left foot arthritis, particularly during the second night of back-to-back games.

The veteran missed the first 14 games of the season with sciatica before making his debut in mid-November, and the team has carefully monitored his workload ever since.

With James unavailable, Los Angeles is expected to adjust their rotation.

Forward Rui Hachimura is likely to move into a larger role after previously coming off the bench, providing additional scoring and size in the frontcourt.

Meanwhile, guard Austin Reaves could see an expanded offensive role alongside the team’s leading scorer, Luka Doncic.

A repeating pattern for the Lakers

The backcourt pairing has already taken on greater responsibility during games when LeBron has been sidelined.

Even at 41, LeBron remains a major contributor for the Lakers. Through 44 starts this season, he is averaging 21.4 points, 7.0 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game.

His playmaking and leadership have been central to the team’s offensive structure. For now, the priority for the Lakers is ensuring their star forward fully recovers from the elbow contusion while continuing to manage the lingering arthritis in his foot.

With the regular season pushing toward its final stretch, keeping LeBron healthy could be crucial for the team’s playoff ambitions.
