Patrick Mahomes puts his incredible Chiefs record vs Broncos at risk in AFC West showdown

For nearly a decade, the Denver Broncos have been unable to solve the conundrum of beating Kansas City Chiefs. Since Patrick Mahomes took over as starting quarterback, he has built one of the most lopsided records in modern NFL history – a run of success that has defined the AFC West.

But as the 2025 season unfolds, the balance of power feels more precarious than ever. The Chiefs have endured a turbulent start, hampered by injuries and inconsistency on offense.

Meanwhile, the Broncos, led by a rejuvenated defense and improved quarterback play, have started to show flashes of genuine competitiveness and boast a 8-2 record.

For the first time in years, Mahomes‘ dominance in the rivalry faces a legitimate test, with the Chiefs desperately needing a win to boost their playoff hopes.

Of course, Mahomes‘ 13-1 record against the Broncos – their defeat in 2023 was just a minor blip – is a huge motivational tool.

A record built on dominance

Since entering the league in 2017, Mahomes has been nearly flawless against Denver.

His accuracy, improvisation, and composure under pressure have repeatedly frustrated the Broncos, who have cycled through multiple head coaches and quarterbacks trying – and failing – to end the streak.

The Chiefs‘ offense under Andy Reid has historically torn through the Broncos‘ secondary, using quick reads and high-tempo play-calling to neutralize their pass rush.

But as Kansas City prepares for this week’s showdown, the situation feels different. The offensive line has shown cracks, the receiving corps has struggled to gain separation, and opponents have begun to exploit those weaknesses.

With the Chiefs now fighting to stay atop the AFC West, Mahomes‘ margin for error is thinner than ever.

The Broncos‘ defense, led by star cornerback Patrick Surtain II, has been more disciplined this season – cutting down on blown coverages that once made Kansas City‘s deep attack unstoppable.

Still, Mahomes thrives on adversity. His awareness of the Broncos’ threat might be what keeps the Chiefs ahead.

Even when performances have been uneven, Mahomes‘ competitive drive and connection with tight end Travis Kelce have remained constants in Kansas City’s success.

The stakes are higher than ever before

For Denver, this matchup represents more than a potential upset – it’s a chance to reset the narrative.

A win over Mahomes and the Chiefs would not only end one of the NFL’s longest active streaks but also establish the Broncos as legitimate contenders within the division.

For Kansas City, the goal is simple: maintain control. The Chiefs have been the standard-bearer of the AFC West for years, but with teams like Denver improving, their grip on the crown is being tested.

When Mahomes takes the field against the Broncos, it won’t just be another divisional clash – there is a pride on the line as well as the chance to cement a spot in the postseason schedule.

But if Mahomes wins again, he’ll extend a run that has already entered NFL folklore. Whichever way it swings, this game could mark a seismic shift in the AFC West for years to follow.
