Andy Reid defended Brian Daboll, but the Giants ignored the Chiefs coach’s plea

Brian Daboll’s departure from the Giants didn’t surprise anyone. The team’s poor performance and quarterback Jaxson Dart’s concussion sealed the head coach’s fate. This was despite Chiefs head coach Andy Reid publicly supporting him just a few weeks ago.

Daboll arrived in New York in 2022 to replace Joe Judge. Under his leadership, the Giants compiled a 20-40-1 record and made the playoffs in 2022.

This year, the signing of veteran Russell Wilson and the arrival of rookie Jaxson Dart raised the hopes of fans and management. However, things didn’t go as planned.

After 10 nightmarish weeks and Dart’s injury in Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears, team owner John Mara’s patience finally snapped. Daboll was fired, even after Reid defended him.

When Reid defended Brian Daboll

In Week 3, after Kansas City routed New York 22-9, Reid made a heartfelt plea to the fans of the Big Blue. “I know New York people are very passionate. So, give Brian an opportunity, man. He has a great personality for this sport and for you people here.”

But it was all in vain, and Daboll ended up losing his job. Fortunately, he also has a history with the Chiefs. In 2012, a year before Reid took over as head coach, Brian served as the team’s offensive coordinator.

This has led analysts like Zak Gilbert of Sports Illustrated to speculate about a possible return of Daboll to the team. “The Kansas City Chiefs might follow the recent trend of hiring recently fired head coaches,” Gilbert suggested.

The expert recalled that last year, the Green Bay Packers hired Robert Saleh, recently fired from the New York Jets, as an offensive consultant. Could Reid do the same with Daboll?

What role would Brian Daboll play in Kansas City?

Saleh is well-known for his defensive brilliance. Daboll, on the other hand, has a recognized talent for managing offenses. Thus, Gilbert suggested that Reid could make room for him as a defensive consultant.

“In theory, along those lines, Daboll could assist [defensive coordinator] Steve Spagnuolo as another set of eyes in breaking down upcoming opponents,” Gilbert stated.

Although he left Kansas City more than a decade ago, Daboll is already familiar with the city and the team. With this background, it’s not entirely impossible that Reid could make a move even this season, giving Spagnuolo another weapon in his arsenal.
