Manchester United sack Amorim after 14 months as manager

It is now official, Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Manchester United manager. The Portuguese coach ends his spell in the Old Trafford dugout after 14 months in charge.Darren Fletcher, a former United player and until now coach of the ‘Red Devils’ U18 team, takes interim charge of the first team and will be on the bench this Wednesday against Burnley.

Amorim was appointed Manchester United manager in November 2024 and took the team to the Europa League final, although they lost the title against Tottenham.

The Portuguese coach’s last game in charge of United was Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, after which he made some prescient comments: “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that’s clear. I know my name is not Tuchel, nor Conte, nor Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United. And that’s how it’s going to be for 18 months or until the board decides to change it. That was my opinion. I want to finish with that. I’m not going to resign. I’ll do my job until someone else comes in to replace me.”

The club’s official statement shows that there have been disagreements among United’s directors in making the decision to sack Amorim: “With Manchester United sixth in the Premier League, the club’s board has reluctantly decided that now is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best chance of achieving the best possible position in the Premier League.”

In sporting terms, Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League table with 31 points, 17 points behind Arsenal, who lead the British domestic championship.
