Sophie Cunningham is back: The Fever confirm that the guard is healthy for the start of the WNBA season

The Indiana Fever have received a significant boost ahead of the 2026 WNBA season, confirming that veteran guard Sophie Cunningham has fully recovered and is ready to return to action.

After an injury-shortened campaign last year, her availability provides renewed optimism for a team that already exceeded expectations.

Cunningham, who joined Indiana prior to the 2025 season following a trade from the Phoenix Mercury, quickly became an integral part of the Fever’s rotation.

Known for her physical style of play, perimeter shooting, and defensive intensity, the 29-year-old guard added a veteran presence to a young and evolving roster.

In her first season with Indiana, Cunningham appeared in 30 games, starting 13 of them. She averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting an efficient 46.9% from the field and 43.2% from beyond the arc.

Those numbers highlighted not only her consistency but also her ability to stretch the floor, an essential element in modern WNBA offenses.

However, her momentum was halted in mid-August when she suffered a torn MCL in her right knee.

The injury forced her out for the remainder of the 2025 season, raising questions about her future as she entered free agency during the offseason.

Despite those concerns, Cunningham chose to remain in Indiana, signing a one-year deal to continue her role with the franchise.

Now, with training camp underway, the Fever have officially confirmed that she has been medically cleared to participate without restrictions.

Her return comes at a pivotal moment for the organization. Alongside Cunningham, fellow guard Tyasha Harris has also been cleared, further strengthening Indiana’s backcourt depth.

With both players healthy, the Fever enter the new campaign with a level of continuity and balance that was missing at times last season.

A fully healthy roster raises expectations in Indiana

The timing of Cunningham’s recovery aligns with a broader sense of readiness across the roster.

Star guard Caitlin Clark has already indicated she is fully fit after dealing with injury concerns, while forward Aliyah Boston has also confirmed she is “good to go” following her own setback.

This collective return to health is critical for a team that surprised many observers in 2025. Despite multiple injuries, the Indiana Fever managed to advance to the playoff semifinals, showcasing resilience and potential well beyond preseason projections.

Now, with a complete lineup, expectations have shifted dramatically. The organization and its supporters believe the team has the necessary pieces to compete at the highest level, including a deep backcourt, versatile scoring options, and a strong defensive foundation.

Cunningham’s role within that framework should not be underestimated. Her experience, combined with her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor, makes her a valuable asset as Indiana looks to build on last year’s success.

Training camp officially begins this week, offering the first glimpse of how the fully assembled roster will function together.

The Fever will open their regular season on May 9 with a home matchup against the Dallas Wings, a game that will serve as an early test of their championship aspirations.

For now, the return of Sophie Cunningham represents more than just a recovery, it signals that Indiana is entering the new season prepared, confident, and ready to contend.
