Former Cowboys star-turned-boxer collapses mid-fight in Russia after severe asthma attack

Greg Hardy has lived through plenty of chaotic chapters, but few were as unsettling as the scene that unfolded inside a small arena in Vologda, Russia.

The former Cowboys defensive end, now years removed from his NFL and UFC stints, returned to combat sports hoping for a fresh start in the boxing ring.

Instead, his exhibition bout against Evgeny Goncharov ended with Hardy collapsing in his corner, struggling desperately to breathe as medics rushed in.

Hardy had just finished a bruising third round when the atmosphere shifted from routine fatigue to genuine fear. He bent over on his knees, clutching the ring apron, signaling that something was wrong.

Moments later, he gasped out a request for an inhaler, a clear indication that he was in the middle of a severe asthma attack. His corner immediately called for medical help, and the fight was stopped before the fourth round could begin.

Fight ends suddenly as panic spreads through the corner

What made the moment even more jarring was how quickly it escalated. Hardy absorbed several clean punches late in the third, but nothing suggested he was fading physically.

Instead, it was his breathing that betrayed him. Medics helped him remain upright while he fought to control his gasps, and trainers tried to calm him until he could finally sit on the stool.

For those who followed Hardy‘s NFL career, the episode was a harsh reminder of a condition he has managed for years. His asthma was well documented during his time in Carolina and Dallas, often flaring during high-intensity stretches.

In MMA, he had occasionally struggled between rounds, but never publicly to this extent. Under boxing lights in Russia, his lungs simply reached their limit.

The stoppage marked yet another setback in a turbulent combat sports career that has seen Hardy move from MMA to bare-knuckle fighting to boxing, collecting knockout losses along the way.

And the timing only deepened the concern, given the headlines he generated earlier this year.

A medical scare layered on top of a troubled 2025

Hardy‘s collapse comes months after he was arrested in Texas over an alleged family altercation, an incident that again placed him under uncomfortable scrutiny.

Though he later posted on Instagram that his family was “perfectly fine” and urged fans to ignore rumors, the arrest added to a long list of past legal issues that continue to cloud his public image.

Friday’s health scare now leaves fans and analysts wondering whether Hardy should continue competing at all.

His combat sports résumé has always been unpredictable, but the combination of physical vulnerability and personal turmoil has created a far more troubling narrative in recent months.

Hardy did eventually regain enough composure to speak with doctors, but the lasting image from Vologda is undeniable: a once-dominant athlete kneeling helplessly in the corner, unable to breathe, unable to continue, and unable to hide the reality that his career might be nearing a crossroads.

Whether this becomes the moment that forces him to step away, or simply another dramatic chapter in a long, complicated story, remains to be seen. But the collapse in Russia will be difficult to forget.
