Canelo Alvarez weighs pride and pay in potential Terence Crawford rematch

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has remained largely out of the spotlight since his surprising defeat to Terence Crawford in September 2025.

The loss cost the Mexican superstar his undisputed supermiddleweight title and sparked immediate speculation about whether he should retire. While some fans have suggested he step away from the sport, Canelo has hinted otherwise. In a recent TV Azteca interview, he openly expressed interest in a rematch with Crawford, leaving fans and analysts wondering what the future might hold.

Despite Canelo‘s declaration, concrete details about a second fight have been scarce. Fans are divided. Some want to see him redeem himself against Crawford, while others feel a rematch would be anticlimactic.

Critics of Crawford‘s style argue that his precise approach, often described as “Shakur-esque”, can be methodical to the point of dullness, leaving viewers feeling that the fight may not be worth the ticket price or subscription fee.

Financial considerations also loom large in the potential rematch. Reports indicate that Crawford is asking for around $100  million to step back into the ring, while Canelo reportedly earned $150  million in their first encounter.

Canelo is unlikely to accept significantly less than that amount. It’s not just about the money, it’s about legacy and pride.

Accepting a drastically reduced purse, especially if Crawford is awarded the larger share, could feel like a public diminishment of his status. For a fighter of Canelo‘s caliber and popularity, negotiations are about respect as much as remuneration.

Why a second fight might feel hollow

The first matchup saw Crawford dominate almost every round, using his agility and precise counters to neutralize Canelo‘s offensive threats. The Mexican fighter admitted afterward that he struggled to adapt to Crawford‘s style, acknowledging that his body “didn’t respond” the way it once had.

Adding to the challenge, Canelo reportedly underwent elbow surgery in the months following the fight, which may further delay his return until mid-2026.

Even if promoters are willing to meet the financial demands of both fighters, the rematch carries risks. Fans may perceive it as a clash driven more by ego and purse negotiations than by competitive excitement.

Should Canelo be offered a fraction of his previous payday while Crawford commands the lion’s share, he may choose to walk away rather than compromise his standing.

For now, the rematch remains in a tentative stage. Whether it happens depends not only on finances but also on timing, health, and the willingness of both camps to settle egos along with contracts.
