Why Stephen Curry believes Cooper Flagg is the NBA’s next big thing

Every era of the NBA eventually gives way to the next, with generational icons like Stephen Curry and LeBron James setting the standard before younger stars emerge to carry the league forward.

Not every highly touted prospect meets that standard, but when they do, the signs are usually clear to those who know the game best. For Curry, that clarity has arrived early in the form of Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg.

The No. 1 overall pick has been under a microscope since entering the league, and his Christmas Day performance against the Golden State Warriors only intensified the spotlight.

While the Warriors secured a 126-116 win and improved to 16-15 on the season, the game told a broader story about the league’s future.

Curry led Golden State with 23 points, but it was Flagg who finished with a team-high 27 for Dallas, showcasing poise and confidence that belied his rookie status.

Following the game, Curry made it clear that Flagg‘s rise comes as no surprise.

The veteran guard pointed to the former Duke standout’s feel for the game and advanced understanding of situations that often take years to develop at the professional level.

“Future’s bright,” Curry said of 18-year-old Flagg. “[He’s playing] way beyond his years. Just his basketball IQ, you can tell.

“That’s a journey you want to stay locked in on. He’s going to be around for a long time.”

That assessment resonated with fans who have already begun to frame Flagg as the next foundational star in the league.

Even in defeat, the rookie’s ability to score efficiently, rebound, and initiate offense stood out against a veteran-laden Warriors roster accustomed to the league’s biggest stages.

Curry sees long-term leadership in Flagg’s game

In a separate postgame interview, Curry expanded on why he believes Flagg is destined to eventually take on a leading role in the NBA.

Beyond raw talent, he emphasized presence, competitiveness, and the kind of composure that translates under pressure.

“Just a true hooper. Competitor. You forget how young he is – just his presence out there on the court,” Curry explained after the game.

“So, the future is bright. I’m glad he got this experience in his first year to understand what the bright lights feel like. The league is in good hands.”

The endorsement carries added weight given Curry‘s long-standing connection to Flagg.

The Mavericks rookie previously attended Curry Camp, an elite training environment that has helped shape several high-level prospects. When Dallas selected Flagg with the top pick, Curry publicly celebrated the moment.

“Curry Camp -> NBA. Let’s get it! @cooper_flagg,” Curry wrote in his Instagram caption.

On the court, both players’ production underscores the passing-of-the-torch narrative.

Curry shows Flagg the way

Despite battling injuries, Curry is still averaging 28.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 46.7 percent from the field.

Flagg, meanwhile, is steadily gaining momentum, posting 19.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game on an efficient 49.3 percent shooting clip.

For the Mavericks, Flagg represents more than a promising rookie; he is a long-term investment in relevance and contention. Perhaps in the future, he could be wearing the Warriors jersey just like his hero.

For Curry, he is evidence that the league’s future is already taking shape. As the NBA continues its natural evolution, voices like Stephen Curry‘s suggest that Cooper Flagg is not just next in line – he may be ready sooner than anyone expected.
