Victor Wembanyama has already surpassed Nikola Jokic with an impressive defensive stat

Victor Wembanyama has already accomplished something few would have expected this early in his career. In just 166 games, the 7-foot-4 center has surpassed Nikola Jokic in total career blocks, highlighting the extraordinary defensive pace the French phenom has set since entering the NBA.

Wembanyama now owns 577 career blocks, moving ahead of Jokic’s total of 573. The comparison becomes even more striking when considering the timeline. Nikola has appeared in 793 games over a career that spans more than a decade with the Denver Nuggets, while Wembanyama has reached that number in barely more than two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Nuggets’ star center has played eight more seasons than Wembanyama, making the milestone another reminder of how quickly the young Spurs centerpiece is building a defensive résumé that already stands out across the league.

Wemby has become a block machine

Shot blocking has been one of Wembanyama‘s defining skills since his arrival in the NBA. His combination of length, timing and mobility allows him to impact plays well beyond the immediate area around the basket. Opponents often adjust their offensive approach simply because he is on the floor, knowing that drives and floaters near the rim can quickly turn into blocked shots or altered attempts.

Reaching 577 blocks in just 166 games underscores how historic that production has been. Many players accumulate similar totals only after several years of consistent playing time, yet Wembanyama has already matched and passed numbers that veterans built over much longer careers.

Jokic, widely regarded as one of the most complete offensive centers in league history, has never built his reputation primarily on rim protection. His value comes from scoring, rebounding and elite playmaking from the center position. That contrast in playing style makes the block comparison particularly revealing.

The French center is a disruptive force

While Jokic dominates offensively, Wembanyama’s defensive presence has become one of the most disruptive forces in the league. For the Spurs, Wembanyama’s defensive production has quickly become the foundation of their identity. San Antonio‘s system is built around his ability to erase mistakes on the perimeter and deter opponents from attacking the paint.

What makes the milestone even more remarkable is that Wembanyama has reached it before completing three full NBA seasons. Players around him on similar statistical lists typically accumulated their totals over many years of steady production. Wembanyama has arrived in that territory almost immediately.

If he continues at anything close to his current pace, the young center could climb the NBA‘s all-time shot-blocking rankings far earlier than most players in league history. For now, passing Jokic’s career total in a fraction of the games serves as another early sign that the Spurs star is building one of the most dominant defensive profiles the league has seen in years.
