Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley make peace: The important step they’ve taken to become friends again

After more than a decade of distance, two of basketball’s most iconic figures, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, appear to be taking the first real steps toward repairing their fractured relationship.

The development marks a significant moment in NBA history, given the pair’s longstanding friendship and equally notable falling out.

The renewed connection was revealed by Charles Barkley, who confirmed that the two have recently spoken and are planning to meet in person.

“We had a conversation,” Barkley said during an appearance on SiriusXM. “We’re going to get together and play golf as soon as basketball is over.”

While the gesture may seem simple, it carries considerable weight. For years, the two Hall of Famers had little to no communication, following a public disagreement that dates back to 2012.

At the time, Barkley openly criticized Jordan’s leadership as an NBA team owner, particularly during his tenure with the then-Charlotte Bobcats.

“I love Michael, but he just has not done a good job,” Barkley said in that earlier interview. “Even though he is one of my great friends, I can’t get on here and tell you he’s done a great job. He has not done a great job, plain and simple.”

Those remarks reportedly strained their relationship to the point of near-complete silence. For nearly 15 years, the two legends, once frequent companions on and off the court, remained distant, despite mutual respect rooted in their playing careers.

A long-standing friendship begins to heal

The roots of their friendship trace back to the golden era of the NBA in the 1980s and 1990s, when both players were among the league’s most dominant and charismatic stars. Michael Jordan, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in basketball history, led the Chicago Bulls to six championships, while Charles Barkley built a Hall of Fame career with teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns.

Off the court, the two shared a close bond, often appearing together at events and maintaining a friendship that extended beyond competition.

However, Barkley’s candid commentary, particularly his willingness to critique Jordan’s executive decisions, ultimately created a divide.

In the years since, Barkley had occasionally expressed regret about the situation, even extending an open invitation for reconciliation.

“Oh, he got my number. He can call me,” Barkley said in 2020, signaling his willingness to reconnect.

Now, that opportunity appears to have materialized. According to Barkley, the recent conversation between the two was amicable and constructive. He also downplayed the extent of any lingering tension, emphasizing the enduring respect between them.

“We’re not like Prince William and Prince Harry. We always have a lot of love for each other,” Barkley explained. “But we talked in the last 72 hours. We just decided to get together and play golf as soon as basketball is over.”

Although Michael Jordan has not publicly commented on the planned meeting, the gesture itself suggests a willingness to move forward.

Jordan, who became the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets (formerly the Bobcats) before selling his controlling stake in 2023, has largely remained private about personal matters in recent years.

For fans of the game, the prospect of these two legends reconnecting is both nostalgic and meaningful.

Their relationship, once emblematic of camaraderie among NBA greats, now has a chance to be restored, one round of golf at a time.
