Paul Mullin returns to Wrexham after loan spell at Wigan is cut short

Paul Mullin, the Welsh-English striker, will return to Wrexham after ending his loan spell with Wigan Athletic early, a decision that comes at a key point in the season, with Wrexham very close to the Championshipplayoff places.

What happened to Paul Mullin?

Manager Phil Parkinson confirmed that Mullin’s loan spell with Wigan is officially over and that the attacker will rejoin Wrexham training this week. The coach was clear that the player needs to get back into the swing of things, having missed a few days of work.

At 31 years of age, Mullin returns to the club where he wrote the most successful pages of his career. Although his time at Wigan saw him score five goals in 26 games, the striker had been left out of the last few squads, which accelerated his departure from the League One side to finally return to the club he loves.

Paul Mullin is a professional footballer from England who plays as a striker for Wrexham AFC in the EFL League Two

Since his arrival in 2021, the striker was a key player in three consecutive promotions, scoring 110 goals in 170 games and becoming the club’s seventh highest scorer of all time.

Its impact transcended sport thanks to the docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham“, which showed the world the transformation of the club following the arrival of its owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Mullin became one of the most recognisable faces of the project, even with a cameo appearance in the film Deadpool & Wolverine.

Mullin was instrumental in the National League title with 38 goals and was again prominent in League Two with 24 goals. However, last season was more complex. Injuries and the greater competitive demands limited his participation, with only five goals in 32 games and a secondary role in the promotion to the Championship.

His contract with Wrexham runs until 2027, although in recent years he has dealt with recurring physical problems with his back, knee and hamstrings which have limited his performance in recent games.

However, beyond his physical condition, Mullin provides leadership and a unique connection with the fans and with the squad that he knows perfectly and that in a decisive stretch of the season, can be decisive.

How are Wrexham doing in the Championship?

Wrexham are just one point away from the play-off places, and the return of idol Paul Mullin could be a decisive factor in Ryan Reynolds‘ side achieving this goal.
