Mexico challenges Brazil in race to host 2029 Club World Cup

If there is a footballing country par excellence, it is Brazil. It is the birthplace of Jogo Bonito, a nation where football is in the air and which is a natural candidate to host any event related to this sport. However, in addition to Morocco, Mexico has now joined the competition to host the next Club World Cup.

FIFA already analysing venues for 2029 Club World Cup

After the successful 2025 Club World Cup, the most ambitious international football club tournament is already planning its next chapter. FIFA is already working on the selection of the host for the 2029 edition, a process that will be defined between December 2026 and March 2027.

The tournament underwent a historic change with the new 32-team format, which was a resounding success as it became closer to the World Cup format. In that edition held in the United States, the champion was Chelsea after beating PSG in the final at MetLife Stadium.

Now, the world’s top soccer body, headed by Gianni Infantino, is considering proposals from various countries interested in hosting the competition.

Brazil raises its hand with World Cup experience

One of the first countries to show its intention to host the 2029 Club World Cup was the Brazilian Football Confederation. The South American country is relying on its experience in hosting major sporting events and the infrastructure left over from the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Brazil has modern stadiums in several cities, as well as extensive hotel and transport capacity, and a unique football culture. These characteristics make it a strong candidate to host a tournament that could even be expanded to 48 teams, an idea that FIFA is considering for future editions.

Morocco enters the competition with an ambitious project

Morocco has entered the soccer scene with a powerful national team. Its last participation in the World Cup, as well as its runner-up finish in the African Cup of Nations, confirms it as a powerful team at present, even more so than Brazil if we stick to soccer. The African nation has invested heavily in sports infrastructure in recent years and has shown its organizational capacity in various continental tournaments. In addition, the country will be one of the hosts of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which could make the Club World Cup a kind of dress rehearsal for that global event.

Mexico could host the next Club World Cup

In recent weeks, another candidate has joined the fray: Mexico. The country has modern stadiums and constant experience in organizing international events.

In fact, several Mexican stadiums will host matches at the 2026 World Cup, including the historic Estadio Azteca, Estadio Akron and Estadio BBVA.

This is why for Mikel Arriola, president of the Liga MX, the country has solid arguments to aspire to host the tournament.

Mexico has a solid place in FIFA, it is the seventh most valuable federation in FIFA, so I think it helps us to aspire now that club tournaments are coming

Mikel Arriola

“Few countries have the capacity and connectivity infrastructure to guarantee all the other elements like Mexico. If the next Club World Cup will be in 2027 and the next in 2029, we would love to participate,” he added.

The experience at the next World Cup will be decisive in determining whether Mexico has a real chance of competing with Brazil and Morocco.
