Lakers urged to target a $60M rim protector to bolster frontcourt defense

The Los Angeles Lakers have not been able to maintain consistency throughout the 2025-26 season. They win some games, lose others, and continue moving forward like a roller coaster. Because of that instability, it is difficult to determine whether they truly possess realistic championship aspirations.

Frankly, at the moment, they appear far, very far from competing with the true powerhouse franchises capable of reaching the NBA Finals. For now, they are merely part of the league’s entertainment landscape, but they do not look like a team with genuine championship potential.

Their weaknesses are well known, particularly on the defensive end. Luka Doncic does not make the slightest effort to support his teammates when it comes to recovering the ball or preventing the opponent from scoring.

Adding to that problem is the current slump affecting several players on the roster. The combination of defensive shortcomings and inconsistent performances has created a perfect formula for failure. Because of this situation, significant changes are expected once the season concludes and the organization begins evaluating the roster for the next campaign.

Significant changes appear to be coming for the Lakers

Several players on the roster are approaching the end of their contracts. The most notable case is LeBron James. If his departure occurs, as many expect, it would free up $51 million in salary cap space for the franchise, according to ESPN reporter Bobby Marks.

Austin Reaves could enter unrestricted free agency, which would potentially open an additional $20.9 million in financial flexibility. With that amount of available space, the Lakers would have an opportunity to enter the market and strengthen the roster.

The most urgent position for the Lakers to address

According to ESPN analyst Kevin Pelton, the most pressing need for the Los Angeles franchise is to reinforce the center position, which is expected to become the organization’s top priority during the offseason.

Over recent years, the Los Angeles lineup has struggled to secure a truly reliable center capable of providing interior presence and physical dominance on the court. At the moment, the team has Deandre Ayton, who joined the roster last summer.

However, like much of the team, he has been extremely inconsistent. That has led many fans on social media to demand that he be removed from the starting lineup. Because of this situation, speculation has intensified, and many believe he may not remain with the team for long.

If he is released, he would add $8.1 million in additional cap flexibility for the franchise, providing greater room to pursue other players. There has been considerable discussion surrounding New Orleans Pelicans center Yves Missi as a potential target for the West Coast team, although nothing concrete has emerged.

Another option for the Lakers, from the perspective of Christopher Kline of FanSided, is New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson.

The Lakers need to look at Mitchell Robinson in free agency.”…”He offers one of the widest catch radiuses in the NBA – melding nuclear bounce with track-and-field agility and a 7-foot-4 wingspan.

Kline wrote and added.

Robinson is a premium vertical spacer. He sprints out in transition, rolls hard off of screens and does all the small things L.A. wishes Ayton would do. Even if the latter picks up his option, the Lakers should target Robinson and stick him in the starting lineup as the Lakers’ version of Derrick Lively or Daniel Gafford.

For now, the only certainty is that the Lakers must significantly strengthen their roster if they want to return to the championship conversation, a place from which they currently remain very far away.
