Messi effect: Argentine’s confession sends Coca-Cola’s value soaring

Messi is one of the most recognized soccer players worldwide, with more than 511 million followers on his social networks. His level of appeal is such that he is able to exponentially increase the market value of a company just by mentioning one of its products and that is exactly what happened recently when in an interview for LUZU TV the Argentine star confessed that he likes to drink wine with Sprite, together “so that it takes effect faster“.

Coca-Cola shares rise thanks to Lionel Messi

That simple mention was enough to boost sales of the soft drink, which is part of the Coca-Cola family.

According to information from Athlon Sports, Messi’s weakness for Sprite would have boosted its sales, generating a 4.5% increase in its shares, which translates into a growth of almost 13 billion dollars.

This is especially paradoxical because Pepsi, Coca-Cola‘s great competitor, has been one of Messi‘s main sponsors throughout his career.

What is Lionel Messi’s favorite drink?

But not only Coca-Cola has benefited from the recent statements of Messi, because, as a result of these, a follower of the Argentine star took on the task of investigating which wine he usually consumes with Sprite, finding a photo in which you can see the Albiceleste captain preparing a drink with the wine “Quinta de Morgado” a soft red wine from Brazil which can be found from $30, a figure quite affordable considering the income of Messi which generated a wave of comments about his simplicity and humility.

In addition to the aforementioned wine, the Argentine captain usually consumes a wine from his own personal line, a premium Syrah of European origin that costs more than 60 euros per bottle and is only marketed online. This red wine is part of a limited and exclusive edition, developed in conjunction with the MM Winemaker winery of Italian-Swiss origin

The bottles in the Messi collection can only be purchased through the official MM Winemaker website, reinforcing their exclusive nature. Messi launched several special collections in 2023 in collaboration with the brand: Diamond, Titanium, Platinum and GOAT 10, which sold out quickly due to the high demand for one of the world’s most popular sportsmen.

This phenomenon once again confirmed the enormous power of Messi‘s influence, even outside of sport. Without starring in a formal advertising campaign, his simple mention was enough to generate global conversation and significant economic benefits for one of the world’s most powerful brands.
