Maxx Crosby’s emotional reaction to potential Raiders QB Fernando Mendoza

The Las Vegas Raiders’ 2025 season has been a disappointment as their hopes of making the playoffs have been over for quite some time.

After yet another year without postseason football, the franchise now finds itself squarely in the conversation for the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. With veteran quarterback Geno Smith failing to provide long-term answers under center, the Raiders are increasingly expected to target a new signal-caller in April, and one name has recently captured attention in unexpected fashion.

That name is Fernando Mendoza, the dynamic quarterback from Indiana University. Mendoza’s profile exploded nationally after he led the Hoosiers to a stunning Big Ten Championship victory over Ohio State, completing an undefeated 130 season and securing a No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.

His performance has him widely viewed as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and a likely first-round pick, with some analysts even considering him a contender for the No. 1 overall selection in April’s draft. Mendoza‘s ability to stay composed in high-pressure situations and deliver accurate throws downfield has made him a standout prospect among his peers.

Why Raiders fans are talking about Fernando Mendoza

Mendoza might not be the typical quarterback prospect, and that’s part of what has made him such an intriguing figure for NFL observers. Standing 6-foot-5 with strong leadership traits and a knack for making clutch throws, he has transformed a program long mired in mediocrity into a national contender.

His emotional, unfiltered postgame interview after defeating the Buckeyes, where he passionately celebrated the historic win and called the Hoosiers “flippin’ champs”, became a viral moment.

One of those watching Mendoza‘s rise is Raiders defensive star Maxx Crosby. On his show, Crosby admitted he was moved to laughter and admiration by Mendoza’s postgame comments, even comparing his energy to that of former NFL quarterback Jameis Winston.

“I’m a fan of him now,” Crosby said, adding that Mendoza might even win the Heisman. His praise generated buzz among Raider Nation about the possibility of pairing Crosby with Mendoza next season, especially if Las Vegas lands the first overall pick.

Draft analysts paint a mixed picture of Mendoza‘s NFL prospects as he isn’t considered an elite athlete with game-breaking mobility, but his consistency and leadership make him a compelling candidate at the top of the draft board.

If the Raiders select Mendoza, it would mark a dramatic pivot toward a new era of quarterback play under center in Las Vegas. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Mendoza can translate his college success and charisma into NFL production.

Whether Mendoza‘s persona and production translate to professional success remains to be seen, but his meteoric rise from under-recruited prospect to college football’s biggest stage has already captured the attention of players and fans.
