Goodbye to Ryan Kelly: the veteran player makes the most difficult decision of his life after a series of concussions

Much has been said and written about the problems caused by the constant collisions between NFL players. It is worth remembering the film made by Will Smith about the issue, based on the research of Dr. Bennet Omalu titled Concussion, which was released in 2015.

In it, the doctor discovers chronic traumatic encephalopathy in former NFL players. The revelation sparked a major controversy, as the league denied that this condition was occurring. Reality, however, eventually told a different story.

For many players, it is true that after years and years of being subjected to constant blows to the head, something ultimately affects them. Some suffer more than others, and they know that the cost of playing this sport can be extremely high.

That is why now, after ten years in the NFL, Ryan Kelly has decided to say goodbye to the gridiron. The Minnesota Vikings announced his retirement. During the 2025 season, the offensive lineman was only able to appear in eight games

because of the concussions he suffered.

Kelly had arrived to spend just one year with the franchise after joining from the Indianapolis Colts through free agency. Now he has chosen to hang up his cleats and enjoy whatever comes next.

Too many concussions for Ryan Kelly

The former Alabama player suffered three concussions during the 2025 season, and throughout his career, he had six more, according to what has been documented. This became the main factor that led him to make the decision to step away from NFL fields.

What an incredible ride it was. I was blessed to be around some of the greatest people this sport has to offer,.

Ryan Kelly

Kelly posted on social media.

I always wanted to leave each place better than how I found it and with that I can hang my hat. Forever grateful for my family and brothers!

Ryan Kelly

The player said.

Kelly entered the league in the 2016 draft and appeared in 129 games, a career that led him to the Pro Bowl on four occasions. Now, with his retirement, the Vikings will have $8.3 million freed up in salary cap space.

This situation surrounding concussions should worry the NFL even more, since Kelly is the second center to retire this week for the same reason. The other player who made the same decision was Drew Dalman, who had played for the Chicago Bears.

Dalman spent only five seasons in the league and, amid ongoing health concerns and repeated issues, decided it was time to bring his journey on the field to an end.

The problems caused by concussions

According to several investigations, concussions can cause players to experience several problems, such as:

  • Confusion and disorientation: Feeling “dazed” or losing track of time.
  • Memory loss: Not remembering the play or the hit.
  • Headaches: Intense migraines and pressure inside the skull.
  • Physical problems: Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision.
  • Sensitivity: Extreme discomfort when exposed to light and noise.
