Luka Modric breaks his silence on the Messi vs. Ronaldo rivalry

For Luka Modric, answering who is better, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, is a real headache. And it is not without reason. It means placing the two greatest players of recent years in the same bowl and selecting the ball that is considered the best.

The former Real Madrid star shared the locker room alongside the Portuguese icon and got to know firsthand his way of being, thinking, and acting. At the same time, he had to face the Argentine star, who showed his quality in every mutual match they played for several years.

For this reason, when he is asked who is better, Modric prefers to answer in the best possible way: by praising both talented players whom we were fortunate to watch play at the same time.

Luka Modric gives his favorite between Messi and Ronaldo

In a recent interview given to Corriere della Sera, the 40-year-old Croatian player was very diplomatic when asked to name his favorite after being requested to say who was better between the Lusitanian and the Pampas-born star.

It’s a question I don’t like. They marked an era. I am more attached to Cristiano because I played with him, he was my partner at Madrid, and I assure you that he is not only a great footballer; he is an incredible person. People don’t know it, but he has a huge heart, always ready to help others. And he’s a simple, normal man. As a man, I don’t know him (Messi), but I do not doubt that he is also extraordinary. As a player, magnificent

Luka Modric

The answer is not simple for anyone. Both have been the great stars of recent times, leaving marks of their quality and talent on the field of play. Without leaning one way, Modric managed to respond in a very mature manner.

Between both players, they have collected 13 Ballon d’Or awards, while Luka himself owns one as well, making any discussion of greatness among them something entirely natural.

Messi has a World Cup to his name, something Ronaldo has not been able to achieve. The latter, however, is close to reaching 1,000 goals across his entire career in Arabia, while the former continues spreading his magic on MLS pitches.

Toni Kroos, a former Real Madrid legend, chooses his favorite between Messi and Ronaldo

For Modric, it was not easy to say who was better; in fact, he did not do so. Solomonically, he sided with both. However, the one who did decide without much hesitation was the Merengues’ midfielder, the German Toni Kroos.

For Kroos, looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, his favorite to win it is Cristiano Ronaldo, above Lionel Messi.

My favourites are Spain, Portugal, France, and Morocco.

With less than six months before the opening whistle at the Azteca Stadium, former players are naming favorites.
