Leo Messi reaches 22 consecutive years scoring at least one goal: when can he reach 900?

A new chapter in soccer history is about to be written, thanks to Lionel Messi. The Argentine star scored his first two goals of the year in the Major League Soccer regular season in Inter Miami’s comeback against Orlando City (2-4) and is about to make history.

The number 10 is only two goals away from reaching 900 official goals in his career. When could he reach this milestone?

Messi, unstoppable

Despite losing their MLS season opener to LAFC (3-0), Javier Mascherano’s team secured their first away win against Orlando, as well as their first win of the season, thanks to goals from Mateo Silvetti, Telasco Segovia, and a brace from Leo.

With an assist from Segovia in the 49th minute and his clean and precise execution of a free kick in the 90th minute, Leo added to his total of 898 goals. He thus extended his streak to 22 years of scoring goals without interruption since his professional debut in 2005, when he scored his first official goal against Albacete, making him one of the few players in soccer history to achieve this feat.

The player who holds the record for the most consecutive years scoring at least one official goal is Cristiano Ronaldo with a streak of 25, from 2002 to 2026. Before his retirement, Zlatan Ibrahimovic managed to score in 24 different calendar years, although not all of them were strictly consecutive.

Now, more than two decades after that first goal, Leo is also just two goals away from reaching the 900-goal mark.

The truth is that Leo could have the chance to reach this number on Saturday, March 7, in MLS Matchday 3, when Inter Miami visits D.C. United at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

Before Matchday 4 of the United States league against Charlotte FC on Sunday the 15th (where he could also reach this milestone), Leo and company will face Nashville SC at GEODIS Park on Thursday the 12th in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 and, again, in the second leg on the 19th.

Will it be in Washington or Nashville? Will it happen in an MLS or Concacaf match? What is certain is that it will be unforgettable.
