The most revealing stat about the Los Angeles Lakers right now is not a scoring total. It is not a shooting percentage. It is a net rating.
When LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves share the floor, the Lakers are being outscored by 7.8 points per 100 possessions. That negative-7.8 figure, compiled by Databallr, has quietly become the driving force behind a rotation rethink inside the locker room.
After Thursday night’s third consecutive loss, head coach JJ Redick admitted that the coaching staff made a conscious decision to lean into what the data suggests works, even if it means limiting minutes with all three stars together.
“I think that lineup that we played tonight,” he said. “I don’t know if it was our first time playing it, but it was something we talked about pregame. Letting Luka and AR play longer together. Letting LeBron play on his own for a little bit. There were seven minutes of that Jake, Luke, AR, Luka, and Jaxson lineup, and that was a good lineup for us tonight.”
The most productive configuration this season has been Doncic paired with Reaves. That duo carries a plus-17.9 net rating. LeBron operating without the other two is also effective, posting a plus-8.8 mark. The problem surfaces when all three overlap.
A rotation built on separation
Against Phoenix, the staggering approach delivered measurable returns. Doncic exploded for 41 points with eight rebounds and eight assists.
The Lakers won his 39 minutes by nine points. Reaves, in 36 minutes, also finished plus-nine. LeBron logged 35 minutes and posted a plus-five differential.
The split patterns extend beyond a single game. Lineups featuring Doncic alone have outscored opponents by 5.3 points per 100 possessions this season.
Conversely, the LeBron–Reaves pairing without Luka has been outscored by 4.5 points per 100 possessions.
Health has played a complicating role. LeBron began the year injured, and since his return, both Doncic and Reaves have missed time.
The trio has not benefited from extended continuity, which James himself acknowledged is necessary to build cohesion down the stretch.
Still, availability does not erase structural tension. Three high-usage creators sharing space requires defensive commitment and offensive compromise.
At present, the defensive side has struggled to keep pace, and the spacing adjustments have not consistently produced positive returns.
