Will Reaves and Doncic return? Lakers push for series sweep over Rockets amid injury concerns

The Los Angeles Lakers are one victory away from completing a surprising first-round sweep of the Houston Rockets as they head into Game 4 on Sunday, with uncertainty surrounding the availability of key pieces Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic. The Lakers have controlled the series despite injuries, leaning heavily on veteran leadership and an evolving supporting cast to push them to the brink of the next round.

Reaves‘ potential return could significantly reshape the team’s offensive rhythm, while Doncic remains unavailable as he continues recovering from a left hamstring strain. With both players listed on the injury report, the Lakers must decide whether to adjust a winning formula or maintain continuity as they attempt to close out the series in dominant fashion.

Austin Reaves has been officially listed as questionable with a left oblique strain that has sidelined him for the first three games of the series. He was previously downgraded after initially being doubtful, but there are signs of possible progress after head coach JJ Redick noted that Reaves was getting shots up before Game 3.

Doncic, by contrast, has already been ruled out and is focusing on rehabilitation from his hamstring injury, leaving the Lakers without another key creator. In their absence, LeBron James has taken on an expanded role, shouldering much of the offensive burden while guiding a reshaped rotation that has still managed to keep control of the matchup.

Lakers weighing impact of potential returns ahead of Game 4

Even without Austin Reaves, the Lakers have managed to maintain strong momentum, relying on depth pieces to step up in key moments. Luke Kennard has delivered efficient scoring in expanded minutes, while Marcus Smart has contributed playmaking and defensive energy that has helped stabilize the rotation.

Their performances have allowed Los Angeles to stay balanced offensively despite missing two high-level creators, keeping the team in control of the series.

Still, the Lakers remain in a commanding position as they aim to close out the series and advance without needing a Game 5. Historically, teams that fall behind 0-3 in a best-of-seven NBA series have virtually no path back, giving Los Angeles a statistical edge regardless of roster uncertainty.

The potential return of Reaves would provide an additional scoring and playmaking boost, but the Lakers are clearly proving they can win in multiple ways. Game 4 now becomes both an opportunity to complete a sweep and a test of depth and adaptability as they navigate injuries while chasing postseason momentum.

Whether or not reinforcements return, Los Angeles enters Sunday with control of the series and a chance to deliver a statement finish on their home floor with expectations high.
