Golden State Warriors rule out Jimmy Butler trade amid salary concerns

The Golden State Warriors entered the 2025-26 NBA season hoping a blockbuster addition could restore their championship credentials.

But a devastating injury to Jimmy Butler has instead flipped the team’s outlook, thrown trade plans into disarray, and forced a fresh evaluation of Jonathan Kuminga‘s role moving forward.

On January 19, Butler suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a win over the Miami Heat, an injury that will sideline the six-time All-Star for the rest of the season and jeopardize his availability at the start of the next campaign.

With Butler in his first year alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Golden State had briefly surged into playoff position.

But now the Warriors must confront a stark reality: their rotation was built around Butler‘s two-star tandem with Curry, and losing that dynamic shifts both short-term hopes and long-term construction.

“I just feel terrible for him that he’s gonna miss the rest of the year. It’s part of the game. Injuries are part of it, but it hurts for sure,” coach Steve Kerr said after learning the severity of Butler‘s injury, according to league sources.

The Warriors were already navigating a complicated roster puzzle that included young pieces and veteran contributors when suddenly their centerpiece was gone.

Butler‘s injury comes at a critical juncture for the organization’s plans at the trade deadline on February 5.

Sources familiar with the Warriors‘ thinking say Golden State is unlikely to shop Butler despite his significant contract and injury. The team views moving him as improbable because of his cap hit and roster implications.

With Butler out, Kuminga‘s status regains urgency

Before Butler‘s injury, the Warriors were believed to be exploring ways to trade Kuminga after the 23-year-old wing expressed a desire for a change of scenery.

But with Butler now sidelined, that calculus is evolving.

Golden State head coach Steve Kerr hinted that Kuminga, who has struggled to find a consistent role in the rotation this season, could step into a larger spot in his absence.

But that opportunity comes against a backdrop of mixed performances and trade speculation.

Before his recent absence, Kuminga had seen his minutes fluctuate, and some league insiders still view him as an intriguing trade chip because of his blend of athleticism and upside.

Veteran voices within the Warriors‘ locker room have publicly downplayed the distraction that Kuminga‘s trade request has caused.

Draymond Green has stated that the situation “isn’t a distraction” because of how the forward has handled himself, and teammates have echoed similar sentiments.

Jimmy Butler himself has been emphatic about his personal bond with Kuminga, insisting it transcends oncourt roles and contract considerations.

“That’s my brother,” Butler said earlier this month. “I love him like a brother and I wish him the best.”
