Gianni Infantino evaluates offside changes after proposal driven by Arsène Wenger

FIFA, with the aim of making soccer a more offensive and attractive sport in the eyes of the world, is still analyzing a possible modification to the offside rule, a modification promoted by former Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger

This modification would seek to ensure that the attacking team’s forwards are not marked offside, as long as any part of their body is in line with the last defender and not the whole body in line, as is currently the case in the regulations.

To move forward, the initiative promoted by Arsène Wenger will have to be approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body responsible for safeguarding the rules of the game, which will hold its annual meeting on 20 January 2026 in London.
