Cristiano Ronaldo confesses that his dream is not to win the next World Cup: his ambition goes beyond that

A few months before playing in his sixth World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo surprised everyone by revealing that his greatest ambition is not to lift the World Cup. The Portuguese striker made it clear that his current motivation is a personal challenge that transcends any tournament.

For many, winning that tournament would be the icing on the cake of a historic career. However, CR7 himself does not see it that way and even in recent statements, the Portuguese was blunt in stating that his legacy does not depend on a single championship.

If you ask me: ‘Cristiano, is it a dream to win the World Cup?’ No, it’s not a dream. Winning the World Cup will not change my name in the history of football. I’m not going to lie. Winning a competition of six or seven games… Do you think it’s fair to define the legacy of a player? No, it’s not

For Ronaldo, his sights are set on something more enduring and measurable over time.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his 1,000-goal target

Any other player of his age would either be retired or thinking about their final season, but Cristiano Ronaldo seems to be far from retiring. The Portuguese star maintains his ambition to become the first footballer to reach 1,000 official goals, a figure that would further reinforce his place among the greatest of all time.

The forward is currently 42 goals short of that mark, a distance that looks attainable if he maintains the pace he has shown in Saudi Arabian football. The most optimistic forecasts suggest that he could achieve it by September 2026, as long as injuries do not interfere.

“I always want to win more trophies and reach the figure that you all know. I’m sure I’ll get there if there are no injuries,” he said during the Globe Soccer Awards gala.

Cristiano and the GOAT debate

Ronaldo was also clear when talking about the eternal discussion of the best player in history. For him, he does not need a World Cup to validate his career.

People say Cristiano will be the best in history if he wins the World Cup. I don’t agree, I already won three titles with Portugal

He recalled that before his arrival, Portugal had no international titles and stressed that winning a World Cup with his national team would be a global surprise, although not a determining condition to define his legacy.

For now, CR7 has his mind set on Al Nassr and the opportunity to win his first league title in the Saudi Pro League. His team is currently in second place just one point behind leaders Al Hilal with 32 points. The tournament is still young and there is a long way to go, but Al Nassr is heading in the right direction with a Cristiano Ronaldo who seems never to give up.
