Yankees star Aaron Judge gets roasted by MLB fans over World Series comments

Aaron Judge has sparked a lively debate among baseball fans after suggesting that the World Baseball Classic delivers a better fan experience than the World Series. The New York Yankees captain, who is representing Team USA in the international tournament, made the comments after his side secured a dramatic 2-1 semifinal victory over the Dominican Republic.

The win set up a highly anticipated championship clash with Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic final on Tuesday night in Miami.

Speaking ahead of the decisive matchup, Judge praised the unique energy generated by fans during the international competition and suggested that the tournament offers a more vibrant atmosphere than Major League Baseball’s traditional championship series.

“It’s bigger and better than the World Series,” Judge said on Sunday about the World Baseball Classic after the narrow win over the Dominican Republic.

“The passion that these fans have, representing their country, representing some of their favorite players, there’s nothing like it.”

While the slugger appeared to be referring specifically to the crowd atmosphere rather than the prestige of the championship itself, many baseball traditionalists reacted strongly to the comments online.

Critics on X quickly mocked the Yankees star for appearing to elevate the international event above the pinnacle of the MLB season.

“Only better because he actually has a shot at winning this one,” wrote one user in response to the comments.

Another added, “Thats a good thing to say when you’re already 35 years old and know you’re never going to win a world series.”

A third user referenced a painful moment from the World Series, writing, “I’d say that too if i lost in the world series,” while sharing a GIF of Judge‘s infamous dropped pop fly in Game 5 of the 2024 championship that helped hand the title to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Did Judge have a point?

Despite the backlash, several fans defended Judge, pointing out that his remarks seemed focused on the atmosphere and crowd engagement rather than the competitive importance of the tournament.

“All this hate on the WBC. Get with the times, folks. This will be World Cup level,” one supporter wrote.

Another fan suggested that ticket pricing plays a major role in shaping the crowd experience at the World Series.

“Normal (passionate) fans are priced out of the World Series. That’s why.”

Others took a more humorous approach while defending the Team USA captain.

“I’m high and still comprehend he’s talking about the fans lmao. Not a soul thinks the WBC matters more.”

Another comment read, “Almost like the atmosphere is full of actual fans who can afford to be there not a bunch of suits and ties.”

The contrast between the two events has been a talking point in recent years.

While the World Series remains the ultimate prize in MLB, the World Baseball Classic has steadily grown in popularity, fueled by national pride and passionate fanbases representing countries around the world.

The new favorite tournament for baseball fans?

Attendance at the tournament in Miami has highlighted that enthusiasm, with fans from multiple nations creating a lively environment inside the stadium.

Tickets for the World Baseball Classic have also been significantly more affordable than those for the World Series, allowing a broader range of supporters to attend.

Now, with Team USA set to face Venezuela in the championship game, Judge will have the chance to focus on delivering on the field while the debate around his comments continues off it.

Regardless of the criticism, one thing appears certain: the atmosphere in Miami for the World Baseball Classic final is expected to be electric.
