Yankees legend swings from baseball to politics, aims to aid Donald Trump in Congress

Mark Teixeira, the former New York Yankees first baseman renowned for his power at the plate and stellar defense, is trading his batting gloves for a campaign trail as he seeks to enter the political arena, and he says one of his key goals is to support President Donald Trump‘s agenda in Congress.

Teixeira, who starred in Major League Baseball for 14 seasons and helped the Yankees capture the 2009 World Series title, formally launched his bid for Texas’s 21st Congressional District this summer after long-time Republican Rep. Chip Roy opted to run for state attorney general instead.

The former slugger, who retired from baseball in 2016 with 409 career home runs and multiple Gold Glove awards to his name, said he is motivated by what he views as a critical moment in American politics and wants to bring his leadership skills from the diamond to the halls of Congress.

“I’m a conservative political outsider running for Congress to fight for America First. President Trump needs strong allies to deliver,” Teixeira said in a statement announcing his campaign.

Adding context to Teixeira‘s bid is the broader political landscape in Texas, where Republicans are aiming to maintain or even expand their influence in the U.S. House.

Recent redistricting efforts in the state have drawn maps that could bolster GOP chances in the 2026 midterms, including in districts like the 21st, which stretches from north of San Antonio through parts of the Hill Country.

Teixeira, who now resides in Texas with his family, highlighted that his conservative values and appreciation for teamwork formed during his playing days helped shape his decision to enter public service.

“As a lifelong conservative who loves this country, I’m ready to fight for the principles that make Texas strong and America exceptional,” he said.

“It takes teamwork to win, and I’m ready to help defend President Trump‘s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”

His campaign messaging underscores key issues that resonate with many Republican voters in the district: stronger border security, fiscal restraint, and a pushback against what he characterizes as “radical woke indoctrination” in education and culture, themes that have become staples in GOP campaigns nationwide.

From the Ballpark to the Ballot Box

Across the sports world, former players have taken varied public stances on national issues, from Hall of Famers expressing personal support for candidates to others facing backlash for their views.

For example, Yankee great Mariano Rivera has publicly endorsed Donald Trump in past elections and defended his political stance amid criticism, a choice that drew both support and ire from different segments of the sports community.

Political analysts note that the 21st District has been solidly Republican for years, with the outgoing incumbent winning comfortably in the last election cycle, but open seats always draw attention and a crowded field.

Teixeira‘s national name recognition could give him an edge in fundraising and visibility, even as voters evaluate whether star power translates to political acumen.
