Why winning the World Baseball Classic is a dream bigger than the World Series for many players

The 2026 World Baseball Classic final between Team Venezuela and Team USA is set to be one of the most thrilling matchups in international baseball history, as both squads showcase elite talent while representing their nations on a global stage, elevating the stakes beyond any regular championship.

For many players, winning the WBC carries a significance that surpasses even the World Series, as the tournament allows athletes to honor their heritage, demonstrate national pride, and create moments that resonate deeply with fans and teammates alike, providing motivation that extends far beyond individual statistics.

Former Major League Baseball star Alex Rodriguez has offered insight into this passion, explaining that players from countries like the Dominican Republic and Venezuela see the WBC as a pinnacle of their careers, because the triumph represents not only personal achievement but also national recognition and the chance to be celebrated by their communities.

“I don’t think people understand in America how much this means to these prospective countries,” Rodriguez said on First Thing First.

“This is like…I had like, four or five Dominican players and a handful of Venezuelan players tell me, ‘Alex, this is so much bigger to us to win this than to win a World Series.’

“And it’s because 20 countries come in, and they come in in a kind of March Madness bracket. You see all the big scores, and then when it comes to cutting up time…they want to establish themselves as the king of baseball.

“And if you’re able to beat the US, what a moment that is not only for the happiness and self-esteem of these countries, but you can see the pride there in Acuna. This is all in, and they’re all in, and it’s pretty awesome.”

Team USA vs Team Venezuela: What you need to know for World Baseball Classic final

In preparation for the final, Team USA advanced after a 2-1 victory over the Dominican Republic, while Team Venezuela earned a dramatic 4-2 win against Italy, using late-inning heroics to secure their place in the championship, which highlights both teams’ resilience and ability to thrive in high-pressure moments.

Pitching will play a key role, with Mets right-hander Nolan McLean starting for Team USA, bringing a 2.06 ERA over 48 innings last season, while Venezuela will counter with Eduardo Rodriguez, who allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings in their semifinal, creating a compelling matchup that could determine the championship’s momentum.

The starting lineups are stacked with MLB stars: Team USA fields Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, and Bobby Witt Jr., while Venezuela counters with Ronald Acuna Jr., Maikel Garcia, and Luis Arraez, ensuring that every at-bat and defensive play will be crucial as both teams contend for their first or second WBC title.

Home-field advantage went to Team USA following a coin flip, since both teams finished pool play with identical 5-1 records, and this could influence late-game managerial decisions, such as pitching rotations, pinch-hitting strategies, and defensive substitutions, intensifying the championship atmosphere.
