Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is the Mexican athlete who earns the most money in the world, and according to the Forbes list, he is the 14th highest earning athlete on the planet, either from the purses he earns from his fights or from the businesses he has outside the ring.

According to Forbes, Canelo Alvarez is worth around $275 million and for his next fight against William Scull he will earn around $80 million, accepting the Saudi money offered by Minister Turki Al-Alshikh with his contract for 5 fights and $400 million.

However, much of what Canelo Alvarez is ‘worth’ does not come from what he earns in the ring, but from what he does outside the ring thanks to his businesses, image rights and sponsorships.

What businesses does Canelo Alvarez own?

The Mexican has diversified his income with his businesses and covering different areas: he has taco restaurants such as Pastor del Rica, which has branches in Guadalajara and the US, he also has gas stations (Canelo Energy) and convenience stores (Upper).

He has also ventured into consumer goods and other products such as alcoholic beverages (VMC), nutritional supplements (Yaoca), a clothing line (Canelo Store) and sports apps (I Can), among other companies and ventures.

In addition, Canelo reportedly earns around $10 million annually in endorsements and around $80 million annually in fight purses on average.

How much does Canelo Alvarez earn per fight?

Before Canelo’s deal with Turki Al-Alshikh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, he had previously signed a similar contract with DAZN in 2018, which was for five years and $365 million, which would pay him an average of $33 million per fight.

However, Canelo rescinded his contract in 2020. According to Forbes, Canelo earns around $75 million a year from fights, while he has earned just over $600 million during his career since turning professional in 2005.
