NBA iconic players pick Kon Knueppel over Cooper Flagg as the Rookie of the year

The race for NBA Rookie of the Year is tightening as the regular season winds down, and a recent panel on Amazon Prime Video added fuel to the debate by backing Kon Knueppel over Cooper Flagg.

Former NBA stars John Wall, Steve Nash and Blake Griffin all made the case that Knueppel, a rookie with the Charlotte Hornets, has done enough to separate himself in what has been a two-player race for much of the year.

The argument starts with expectations. Knueppel entered the league without the same level of hype as Flagg, who joined the Dallas Mavericks as one of the most anticipated prospects in years.

A key player with Charlotte

Yet Knueppel has matched, and in some areas exceeded, those expectations while playing a key role in keeping Charlotte in the playoff picture. Wall emphasized that element, pointing out that Knueppel’s impact has been both surprising and consistent, making him, in his view, the clear choice for the award.

Team context has become a central theme in the debate. While Flagg has delivered standout individual numbers, Dallas remains outside the playoff race. Knueppel, on the other hand, is contributing meaningful minutes on a team with postseason aspirations. That distinction has resonated with analysts who value winning as part of the Rookie of the Year criteria.

The discussion has also drawn comparisons to past races. Iman Shumpert likened the current battle to the 2004 Rookie of the Year race between LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. In that case, Anthony’s Denver Nuggets made the playoffs while James’ Cleveland Cavaliers did not, yet James still won the award based on overall talent and long-term projection.

Flagg still has a strong case

That historical precedent complicates the current conversation. If voters prioritize individual brilliance and star power, Flagg has a strong case. If they lean toward impact on winning, Knueppel’s résumé becomes more compelling.

With VJ Edgecombe of the Philadelphia 76ers holding steady in third place, the spotlight remains firmly on the top two contenders. As the season enters its final stretch, performances in meaningful games could ultimately tip the balance.

For now, the endorsement from Wall, Nash and Griffin highlights a growing sentiment that Knueppel’s combination of production, consistency and team success may give him the edge in one of the closest Rookie of the Year races in recent memory.
