Intergender boxer Lin Yu-ting to compete in women’s category after review

Olympic champion Lin Yu-tinghas been cleared to fight in international competitions after the World Boxing Federation completed a review of her gender eligibility status.

Lin, who won gold in the -57kg category at the Paris Games, has remained out of several high-profile events since the federation implemented a new eligibility policy last summer.

Now, although the results of any tests have not been revealed, Lin has been declared eligible to compete in the women’s category at World Boxing events. This opens the door for her to fight at the Asian Championships later this month in Mongolia.

“We recognise that this has been a difficult period for the boxer and the CTBA, and we appreciate the way they have approached the appeal process and their recognition of World Boxing’s requirement to ensure that its eligibility policy, designed to provide safety and sporting integrity, has been properly implemented and followed,” said World Boxing Secretary General Tom Dielen.

It should be remembered that Lin and Algeria’s Imane Khelif were protagonists in the Games for gender standards and the gold they won, even though the IOC rules at the time allowed both to compete.

However, since taking over as the governing body for Olympic boxing, World Boxing has implemented a requirement for unique genetic testing for female boxers competing in women’s categories.
