Wayne Rooney advises Arsenal to “play dirty” to beat Manchester City

Wayne Rooney is known as one of Manchester United’s all-time leading scorers, but also for speaking his mind, which has made him a constant figure in various debates.

Now, with the Premier League entering its final stretch where every detail counts, the former footballer has offered an opinion that, as usual, has not gone unnoticed: if Arsenal wants to beat Manchester City in the crucial title showdown this Sunday, April 19, they must be willing to go beyond their usual style.

Rooney suggests “playing dirty”

Arsenal leads the table with 70 points, followed by City with 61 points, but with a game in hand. A win for the “Gunners” could seal the league title, while a City victory would completely reopen the race.

In this context and ahead of Sunday’s match at the Etihad Stadium, the former English striker analyzed the challenge facing the London side in comments to The Wayne Rooney Show, where he stated that Pep Guardiola’s team holds a “psychological advantage”:

“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got. They’ll be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players. They’ll be worried because when you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking, ‘Where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance,” Rooney said.

Manchester City has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to handle pressure, so the former Everton player suggested that Mikel Arteta’s team might need to “play dirty.”

Far from referring to cheating, Rooney meant making decisions on the field such as disrupting the opponent’s rhythm, controlling the pace of the game, and competing with greater physical intensity. In other words, making life difficult for City.

“Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they have to do whatever it takes to stop City from winning. They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring,” he added.

The message is clear: to have a shot at the title, Arsenal must not only rely on their talent but also draw on their adaptability and an extra dose of character.

The match between Manchester City and Arsenal on Sunday, April 19, will kick off at 11:30 AM ET at the Etihad Stadium and will be crucial in determining the Premier League lead.
