Venus Williams has been named one of the co-chairs for the 2026 Met Gala, joining forces with global superstar Beyoncé, acclaimed actress Nicole Kidman, and the longtime host of the event, Anna Wintour.

This groundbreaking appointment marks Williams‘ first time co-chairing the Gala, a notable expansion of her influence from the tennis court to the cultural and fashion arena.

The 2026 Met Gala coincides with the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition titled “Costume Art.”

This exhibition explores how clothing and the human form have been depicted throughout art history, focusing on themes such as the naked body, pregnancy, and aging.

Williams‘s involvement signals the Gala’s continued embrace of leaders outside of fashion and film, highlighting how sports figures can shape cultural discourse.

Venus’ influence on fashion and sport

With a decorated career that includes seven Grand Slam titles and decades as a trailblazer for women in sports, Williams brings a unique perspective to the Met Gala.

Her appointment as co-chair acknowledges not only her achievements on the tennis court but also her growing influence in fashion and philanthropy.

By joining Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Wintour, Williams joins a select group capable of shaping the tone and guest list of the Gala, elevating the conversation around personal expression and the intersection of art and identity.

Her sister, Serena, previously co-chaired the Gala in 2019, making the event a notable family moment in fashion history.

The Williams sisters’ presence emphasizes the increasing recognition of athletes as influential cultural figures, capable of transcending their sport to impact global style trends.

What to expect from the 2026 Gala

The inclusion of Venus alongside Beyoncé and Kidman signals a diverse, multidisciplinary approach to the Gala.

Beyoncé returns to the co-chair role after a decade, bringing musical and cultural gravitas, while Kidman contributes her elegance that has shone through cinema screens for decades.

Together with Williams and Wintour, this quartet represents a fusion of sport, entertainment, and fashion, ensuring the 2026 Met Gala will feature a highly eclectic and star-studded guest list.

The exhibition’s theme, “Costume Art,” encourages attendees to explore bold, body-conscious fashion statements, and this ties in with Venus‘s experience of athletic performance, body image, and self-expression positions. Fashion experts anticipate daring red-carpet looks that promise a blend of glamor and individuality.

An incredible tennis comeback

After a 16-month absence from competition, Williams made a remarkable comeback at the age of 44 the Washington D.C Open.

There, she recorded a straightsets victory over Peyton Stearns, winning 63, 64 in what was her first singles win since 2023. By doing so, she became the secondoldest woman to win a tourlevel WTA singles match, a feat last accomplished by Martina Navratilova at age 47 in 2004.

Beyond her singles success, Williams also tasted victory in the women’s doubles draw at the same event alongside Hailey Baptiste, showing that her competitive instincts remain sharp despite time away from the tour.

Her comeback extended to the U.S. Open, where she accepted a wildcard to compete in both singles and doubles draws – making her first Grand Slam appearance in two years and marking her 25th appearance at the event.

Although she exited singles competition in the early rounds, her performance drew attention for its resilience and for the crowds she continued to draw as one of tennis’s most enduring icons.

Now, she will take her appeal to the red carpet, garnering excitement about what lies in store for the world’s most iconic celebrities.
