Alexi Lalas rips U.S. Soccer leadership over Matt Crocker’s Saudi move

The United States men’s national soccer team has been rocked by unexpected news: Matt Crocker, its sporting director, has stepped down from his position just two months before the FIFA World Cup.

In a surprising twist, the Welsh executive has chosen to accept a multimillion-dollar offer to join the Saudi Arabia national team – a rival that will also be competing in this summer’s World Cup.

Explosive reaction from Alexi Lalas

This unexpected move drew a strong reaction from former United States national team legend Alexi Lalas, who said that just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse, they somehow always do.

“Just when I thought the United States Soccer Federation couldn’t get more bat crap crazy, this happens,” Alexi Lalas said Tuesday morning on his podcast.

“It’s a really bad look, not just for the U.S. Soccer Federation, but at a time when soccer can’t afford to be having these bad looks. This is the leader, the architect for what is going to be on display this summer on the field and he’s not going to be there.

“Not only is he not going to be there, but he is going to be with another competing team at the World Cup. It just seems very weird.”

Matt Crocker’s departure is a major blow to the leadership of U.S. soccer, which now faces a complicated scenario just weeks before hosting a competition it has spent years preparing for.

Crocker, who took the job in 2023, played a key role in bringing Mauricio Pochettino to the bench. However, he will now switch projects to join the Saudi Arabia national team, creating uncertainty at a critical moment for the United States men’s national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
