Vegas sphere or not? Mayweather uncertain about venue for Pacquiao rematch

Rumors surrounding a return to the ring for Floyd Mayweather have taken a more uncertain turn, as fresh doubts emerge about both his opponent and the potential venue for a proposed rematch with Manny Pacquiao. What initially looked like a clear-cut comeback story is now clouded by shifting plans and unclear details.

In late February, multiple reports suggested that Mayweather was preparing to step out of retirement for a series of high-profile bouts. Among the most talked-about were an exhibition clash with Mike Tyson and a September meeting with Pacquiao, revisiting one of boxing’s most iconic rivalries.

Their 2015 encounter drew massive global attention, and the idea of a sequel, possibly streamed to a wide audience, quickly generated excitement.

At the time, the narrative seemed straightforward: Mayweather would ease back into the spotlight with an exhibition against Tyson before building toward a larger event against Pacquiao. Some reports even hinted at a blockbuster venue and major distribution plans, further amplifying anticipation.

However, the situation has since become far less certain. Questions first surfaced about the Tyson exhibition, and now similar concerns are affecting the Pacquiao rematch. Mayweather himself has added to the ambiguity, suggesting that key aspects of the event are still undecided.

Speaking candidly, he acknowledged that even the fight’s location remains up in the air. One venue that has been discussed is the Las Vegas Sphere, a cutting-edge arena known for its immersive design and high-profile events.

Still, Mayweather emphasized that nothing has been finalized, leaving open the possibility that the bout could take place elsewhere-or be delayed entirely.

“Well, as of right now, we don’t know exactly where the fight is going to be,” Mayweather stated. “We don’t know the location of the fight. The Sphere is one of the places that they talked about. So, we don’t know if it’s 100% going to be there.”

Exhibition plans take priority over comeback

Perhaps more significantly, Mayweather clarified that his upcoming appearances should not be viewed as a full return to professional boxing. Instead, he framed them as exhibitions designed to entertain rather than compete for titles or rankings. This distinction reshapes expectations around a potential Pacquiao rematch, which now appears unlikely to carry official status.

Discussing his motivation, Mayweather pointed to his continued fitness and relatively low level of wear and tear from his career. He described staying active in training while enjoying time with family, and suggested that participating in exhibitions offers a way to balance both.

Rather than pursuing the pressures of professional competition, he seems content to stage selective events that appeal to fans.

In addition to the possible Pacquiao bout, Mayweather mentioned other planned appearances, including an exhibition in Greece and another scheduled for June. These commitments reinforce the idea that his return is centered on spectacle and global engagement rather than a traditional comeback.

The prospect of Mayweather facing Pacquiao again remains uncertain. With no confirmed venue and shifting expectations about the nature of the fight, what once seemed like a major boxing event is now far from guaranteed.
