Two teams fighting for Pete Alonso. Paul Skenes could be the key to tipping the balance

The Boston Red Sox have taken a step forward in the race to land Pete Alonso, determined to secure a stellar bat to bring them closer to the elite of the 2026 playoffs. However, the deal will not be straightforward. Although Boston remains the frontrunner, several teams have shown interest, including an unexpected contender: the Pittsburgh Pirates, who, according to journalist Bob Nightengale, “are lurking in the market for Alonso”, a phrase that set off alarm bells at Fenway Park.

The situation is even more tense given the stance of the New York Mets, who have again refused to commit to a long-term contract with their star. Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million deal in 2025, with an opt-out clause, and all indications are that he will again explore free agency in search of the contractual security that New York is unwilling to give him.

Pete Alonso reveals his preference for Boston

In this context, the Red Sox seem to have an advantage: Alonso, according to reports, has told those close to him that Boston is high on his list of preferred destinations. Projections point to a four- or five-year deal, close to $28 million annually, figures Boston is willing to consider to add a proven right-handed power bat and reliable first base defender.

For the Red Sox, Alonso represents more than just a reinforcement: he symbolizes a change in the team’s competitive intensity, eager to be a protagonist in October once again. However, nothing is guaranteed.

Pittsburgh Pirates complicate the picture with an unexpected offensive

The emergence of the Pirates has disrupted plans. Historically prudent with spending, the Pittsburgh team claims that it will have an active offseason, although its recent finances – where ticket revenues between 2022 and 2024 barely matched the payroll – raise doubts. Even so, much of their fans are pressuring management to build a competitive team around the rising ace Paul Skenes.

If the Pirates do enter the race for Alonso, Boston could be forced to up its offer, compromising some of its budget and restructuring its moves for 2026.

Kazuma Okamoto becomes Boston’s plan B

In a potential bidding war, the Red Sox already have an alternative plan in place: Kazuma Okamoto. The Japanese player had an exceptional 2025 season, hitting .327 with a 210 wRC+ in 69 games, and MLB Trade Rumors projects him to sign a four-year, $64 million contract, not including the posting fee. His versatility – being able to play third and first base – and his right-handed power make him a real solution if Alonso slips away.

Boston Red Sox play chess while MLB moves checkers

Between strategic moves, unexpected competition and financial pressure, Boston seems determined to strike. Alonso is the priority and Okamoto the perfect backup

If Steve Cohen keeps the door closed in New York, the noise in the bidding could be louder than Fenway on an October night. Boston wants a slugger and does not plan to come out of this offseason empty-handed.
