The Yankees could find answers in the Phillies if they fail to convince Cody Bellinger to stay

The New York Yankees are desperate to erase the nightmare that was their 2025 MLB season. After falling short in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, what followed was a complete collapse – and now the front office is under pressure to respond fast.

The Yankees could find answers in the Phillies if they fail to convince Cody Bellinger to stay

With Brian Cashman searching for answers this MLB offseason, the spotlight has been firmly placed on one glaring need: a reliable outfielder.

Re-signing Cody Bellinger remains the ideal outcome, while alternatives like Kyle Tucker or Austin Hays remain on the board. But there’s another path the Yankees could take – one that might fly under the radar.

That’s where Nick Castellanos enters the conversation

The Philadelphia Phillies appear ready to move on from the 33-year-old slugger, opening the door for a potential trade scenario that could benefit both sides. For the Yankees, Castellanos represents a classic low-risk, high-upside gamble.

A two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, Castellanos has hit 20+ home runs in six different seasons and brings valuable corner outfield versatility. Just as important, he’s been durable, appearing in at least 136 games in four straight years.

Even better? He’s entering the final year of his $100 million contract, meaning the Yankees wouldn’t be tied down long term.

Still, there are warning signs. Castellanos managed only 17 home runs with a .694 OPS last season and struck out 133 times, continuing a trend of offensive inconsistency. He also drew headlines for a public rift with Phillies manager Rob Thomson, raising questions about clubhouse chemistry.

Even so, for a Yankees team trying to reclaim the AL East and end a World Series drought that dates back to 2009, Castellanos could be a calculated bet worth making.

Sometimes, the smartest move isn’t the flashiest – it’s the one that helps you get back on top.
