The staggering amount fans would pay for a ball signed by Shohei Ohtani

The crack of the bat echoed through the stadium, and within seconds, a piece of baseball history was flying into the crowd. Now, almost a year later Shohei Ohtani’s first World Series home run ball for the Los Angeles Dodgers is now up for auction, and it could sell for more than $250,000.

The historic baseball comes from Game 1 of the 2025 World Series, when Ohtani launched a two-run homer in the seventh inning at Rogers Centre.

The ball bounced off a fan’s hands before landing with another spectator, who ultimately secured the prized souvenir.

Now authenticated and verified, the ball is being auctioned by SCP Auctions, with bidding expected to close Sunday. Experts estimate it could fetch at least $250,000.

The ball carries official markings, including the World Series logo and the stamp of MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

It has also been photo-matched by SIA Photo Match, confirming its journey from Ohtani’s bat to the stands.

The fan who caught it-a lifelong Toronto Blue Jays supporter-reportedly attended the game after winning tickets in a last-minute contest.

He later documented the moment in a signed letter included with the auction listing.

Why is the ball so valuable?

This isn’t just another collectible, it represents a defining milestone in Ohtani’s already historic career.

Despite his global stardom, he had never hit a home run in a World Series prior to this moment. That changed in emphatic fashion.

Ohtani went on to deliver a dominant series overall, batting .333 with three home runs, five RBIs, and six runs scored across seven games.

But it was that Game 1 blast that helped set the tone for the Los Angeles Dodgers championship run.

In the world of sports memorabilia, “firsts” carry immense value-and when tied to a generational talent like Ohtani, demand only increases.

Collectors and analysts alike view this ball as one of the most desirable recent MLB items to hit the market. Ohtani’s global appeal – spanning both Japan and the United States – adds another layer of demand.

The narrative’s importance

The story behind the ball also enhances its value. From the dramatic bounce in the stands to the fan’s unexpected catch, the full chain of custody has been documented and verified.

That level of authentication is critical in high-end auctions, where provenance can significantly impact final price.

Bidding is expected to intensify as the auction deadline approaches, with collectors likely driving the price beyond initial estimates.

The final sale could set a benchmark for modern baseball memorabilia tied to active superstars-especially those still building their legacy.

For now, one fan’s unforgettable night at the ballpark is about to turn into a potentially life-changing payday.
