The reason why Shohei Ohtani is absent from the Los Angeles Dodgers and misses the series against Texas Rangers

Los Angeles Dodgers are visiting Globe Life Field in Arlington to begin their three-game series against the Texas Rangers. However, the MLB champion will have to play these games without its designated hitter, Shohei Ohtani. This was announced by manager Dave Roberts prior to the first game of the series

The reason the Japanese pitcher/hitter will be absent for at least five days from the Angels’ lineup is because he was placed on the Major League Baseball paternity list after it was revealed that the birth of his first child is about to happen.

Shohei Ohtani couldn’t break the news, but Dave Roberts spoke to the press

In a press conference, Dave Roberts informed the media of the news about Ohtani.

He and Mamiko are waiting for the birth at some point. That’s all I know. I don’t know when he’s going to come back and I don’t know when they’re going to have the baby, but obviously they’re together waiting for this.

MLB’s paternity regulations state that a player is allowed to miss up to three games. That is why Shohei Ohtani will be out of the lineup against the Texas Rangers. The Dodgers have a three-game series in Texas before an off day on Monday. On Tuesday they play against the Chicago Cubs.Ohtani, 30, posted on his Instagram account in late December that he and his 28-year-old wife, a former professional basketball player from his native Japan, were expecting a baby in 2025. “I’m looking forward to the little rookie joining our family soon!” the Dec. 28 post read.

Los Angeles Dodgers beat Texas Rangers without Shohei Ohtani

After this news broke, the first game of the series between the Dodgers and Rangers took place on Friday, April 18, where the defending champions won 3-0 with a victory for Yoshinobu Yamamoto to put his record at three wins and one loss. Meanwhile, Eddie Rosario, who went 0-2, took Shohei Ohtani’s place.

The game began with a home run by Tommy Edman in the first inning and it was in the ninth where the Los Angeles Dodgers scored the win with two more runs from a RBI single by Kike Hernandez and a sacrifice fly by Will Smith to bring Edman and Chris Taylor home.
