Florentino Perez’s Real Madrid is not the same as it used to be

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is going through what is probably one of the worst moments in the club’s recent history. In just four days, Los Blancos have let slip the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, which suggests that 2026 will be a very complicated year for the club.

With the supposed galacticos 2.0, Real Madrid has not been able to get back on track, not even with the arrival of Kylian Mbappe last season, where, curiously, his former team ended up winning the Champions League and achieving a sextet that, even with the extensive history of the club, it has never achieved.

Florentino Perez: Could 2026 be his last year as Real Madrid president?

At 78 years of age, current president Florentino Perez has no plans to step aside, as the businessman plans to remain at the helm of the club at least until 2028, when his current term expires. However, the results must go the club’s way for this to be possible and for an emergency vote not to be called into question his continuity at the helm of Real Madrid

Many internet users comment on social networks that the bad moment that the Champions League’s most successful club is going through is largely due to Florentino and his decisions as president.

The signing of the 2018 World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe is being questioned, without first prioritizing a midfielder with the conditions of Toni Kroos or Luka Modric, who left Real Madrid as true legends of the club and of soccer in general.

Among the comments from users on social networks, there is also talk of the hasty dismissal of Xabi Alonso by the Bavarian club. Internet users and sports media have compared the numbers of the former coach with the first matches of the current Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick, where surprisingly both coincided in games won, lost and drawn.

The difference is that Barcelona knew how to be patient with the German coach, managing to give the Blaugrana club an identity in a short time and, with it, titles, some of them being won against Real Madrid, such as the Supercopa de Espana

The trophies at stake in the 2025-26 season for Real Madrid

The Merengues were eliminated from two competitions at the beginning of 2026, the first being the Spanish Super Cup, where the white club lost in the final in Saudi Arabia, 3-2 to Hansi Flick’s BarcelonaThe second competition lost by Florentino Perez’s team was the Copa del Rey, where they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Albacete, a club coached by former Madrid midfielder Jesus Vallejo, by a score of 3-2.

Real Madrid is currently second in La Liga, just four points behind leaders Barcelona, with a good chance of continuing to fight for the domestic title.

The other competition is the Champions League, where Vinicius Junior and his team are in eighth position, with plenty of room to continue competing and be protagonists if the team finds peace and harmony on the field without depending on individualities all the time.
