The 31-year-old veteran, Alex Bregman, recently signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs for $175 million over five years, and although he had worn the number two throughout his MLB career, for the 2026 season the player will change his number.

Bregman has become a very successful third baseman in the Major Leagues and in his extensive career he has been a three-time MLB All-Star.

Alex Bregman signs for the Chicago Cubs

Last Saturday, January 10, it was reported through several official media that Alex Bregman, one of the best free agents on the market, was no longer a free agent for $175 million and five seasons with no-trade option, signing for the Chicago Cubs.

Alex Bregman’s decision to walk away from the Boston Red Sox was not an easy one for the player, according to certain sports media outlets. After a season in Boston where he hit .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, Bregman opted to rescind the last two years of his contract. Although they reportedly offered a five-year, $160 million contract to keep him on the team, Boston did not reach the figure and were left wanting to keep one of the best players in all of MLB.

Upon his arrival with the Chicago Cubs, Bregman not only changes teams, but also his number, as after wearing number 2 throughout his major league career he will now wear number 3 on his jersey, symbolizing a new chapter in his career after his time with the Boston Red Sox and his wonderful career with the Houston Astros.

Alex Bregman is a professional baseball player who plays for the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball (MLB)

Born in Albuquerque on March 30, 1994, he is a very talented third baseman in MLB. He began his career when he was selected by the Houston Astros with the second overall pick in the 2015 draft. Since then, in every season he has played, he has proven to be a versatile and talented player, capable of turning the course of a game with his skills.

In 2025, Alex was named an All-Star, cementing his reputation as one of the best third basemen in the league, and his skill earned him the Silver Slugger in 2019 and the Gold Glove in 2024, both in the American League.
