The painful sacrifice the Yankees will have to make if they want to sign Fernando Tatis Jr.

In New York they know they cannot afford to continue to rely so much on Aaron Judge, which is why they are after one of the most explosive bats in MLB, Fernando Tatis Jr. However, that desire comes at a very high price, as they would have to part with several of their most valuable prospects. Although the Padres insist they have no plans to move their star, the financial reality could open the door. The question is whether the Yankees are ready to pay the price.

A move that would change the Yankees’ course

The possibility of joining Tatis Jr. with Aaron Judge looks attractive to any Bronx fan. Not only would they add an elite bat, but also a player who has demonstrated Gold Glove-level defensive ability, something that would raise the team’s ceiling both in the outfield and in the lineup.

To convince San Diego, they would have to send a package to the Padres too good to refuse

George Lombard Jr., the prospect the Yankees would offer the Padres

Among all the names in the New York Yankees’ minor league system, one stands out above the rest, George Lombard Jr. The shortstop is considered the organization’s top prospect and a premium talent at a strategic position. The Padres, with Xander Bogaerts as the starter but with doubts about how long he will be able to hold that position, would see Lombard as an almost obligatory investment for the future.

For the Yankees, it would be a very sensitive loss. Lombard not only represents long-term security, but also a complete player profile, with solid defense and steady growth. But if they really want Tatis, this is the first name that should be on the table.

The arm that hurts to let go: Carlos LaGrange

The other premium prospect that San Diego would look for is Carlos LaGrange, the best young arm in the Yankees system. With a fastball that touches triple digits and an imposing physique, LaGrange is intriguing because he can develop as a high-impact starter or as a dominant closer.

For the Padres, who prioritize young, high-ceiling arms, he would be an ideal target. For the Yankees, a sacrifice that limits their future depth… but again, necessary in a package for Tatis.

Spencer Jones, an expendable outfielder if Tatis arrives

The prospect has shown tremendous power, but contact problems that raise doubts about his projection. For New York, his departure would be manageable if Tatis Jr. arrives to stabilize the outfield in the long term.

Elmer Rodriguez, the player New York City would hesitate to let go

The pitcher is close to making his debut and could soon be fighting for a spot in the rotation, but his immediate value also makes him attractive to San Diego. Although the Yankees might be reluctant, he would end up coming in if he is the piece that ties the deal together.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is an undeniable talent, but acquiring him means the Yankees would have to give up several years of control over their best young players. It’s a leap into the unknown that could pay off in the present and have serious repercussions in the future.
