The offer the Pirates made to Kyle Schwarber to join Paul Skenes is revealed: contract details

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traditionally been a measured team in their investments, so it surprised everyone when they showed interest in Kyle Schwarber, one of the most powerful and sought-after hitters in free agency. The possible pairing with Paul Skenes, their new pitching star, excited all their fans while arousing skepticism throughout the MLB environment.

An unexpected move in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh franchise is not usually in the headlines when it comes to big contracts. However, this winter they decided to break the mold. According to recent reports, the Pirates made Kyle Schwarber a four-year offer worth more than $100 million, a figure that historically surpasses almost any previous proposal from the club.

The news gained traction after a report noted that, despite skepticism surrounding the possibility of Schwarber actually signing with Pittsburgh, the mere fact that the organization put such an amount on the table already represents a significant shift in its philosophy.

This was confirmed by Ken Rosenthal: “Are you sitting down? The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a four-year offer to free-agent designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, according to people familiar with their conversations. The offer almost certainly exceeds $100 million“

Although the Phillies remain their most likely destination, the Pirates offer sends a clear message: they want to compete and surround Skenes with equally talented players.

Kyle Schwarber’s numbers

Schwarber enters this winter as one of the most coveted bats on the market. His 2025 season was spectacular: 162 games, 56 home runs, 132 RBIs and a runner-up finish in the MVP voting. In addition, his reputation in the postseason makes him one of the most feared hitters of the moment.

It is natural that such a production attracts multiple teams. Schwarber not only brings power, but also leadership and experience in decisive series. For a rebuilding organization like Pittsburgh, adding such a figure could accelerate its competitive process.

Where will Kyle Schwarber play in the 2026 season?

Interest does not end in Pittsburgh. According to reports, Schwarber is being sought from Boston and Cincinnati. On the one hand, the Red Sox are looking to add an impact bat if they fail to retain Alex Bregman, while the Reds see Schwarber as an ideal leader for their locker room and a piece that would immediately connect with the fans, especially because of his origin in Ohio.

What would it mean for the Pirates to pair Schwarber with Paul Skenes?

With the emergence of ace Paul Skenes, the face of Pittsburgh‘s future, the organization wants to build a competitive roster around him. The arrival of Schwarber would offer offensive balance, experience and a strong message: the Pirates are ready to stop being bit players in the Major League Baseball show.
