The LeBron and Neymar effect: The hidden forces driving Lamine Yamal’s rise to glory

The anticipation surrounding the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg has placed Lamine Yamal firmly in the spotlight as Barcelona prepare to face Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano. Trailing 2-0 on aggregate after the first leg at the Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona face a demanding task, yet confidence and belief in a possible comeback remain very much alive within the squad and its supporters.

In the build-up to the match, Yamal sparked widespread discussion on social media after updating his Instagram profile picture to an image of LeBron James celebrating the 2016 NBA Finals victory with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That historic win came against the Golden State Warriors and is widely remembered as one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. Fans quickly connected the reference to Barcelona’s own situation, interpreting it as a symbolic message of belief ahead of a difficult second leg.

Inspiration from sporting legends shaping belief

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, the young winger explained that the image was not random but a deliberate source of motivation. He highlighted LeBron James’ ability to lead extraordinary comebacks as something he wants to mentally draw from before stepping onto the pitch.

“He is one of the figures who can inspire me for tomorrow’s game, and that’s why I chose him. I will think about how he did it, and hopefully it happens with us [the comeback],” Yamal told the press.

Yamal also spoke at length about his admiration for Neymar, a player he has repeatedly described as one of his biggest influences. He referenced the famous 6-1 Champions League comeback for Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, a match he says he has watched many times and even experienced live as a child.

For him, that night represents the perfect example of belief, intensity, and attacking brilliance under extreme pressure.

In earlier remarks, Yamal explained that Neymar‘s creativity and style left a lasting impression on him during his formative years. While he has also admired other global icons, he consistently returns to Neymar as the player who most shaped his footballing imagination.

“I was five years old when I saw him at Santos, but seven years old when I saw him in person at FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou. It was incredible to see him,” Yamal told CNN Sport in January 2025.

“Yes, it’s true that (Lionel) Messi was there who was also incredible, but he was something totally different. Neymar has always been my idol. He’s a star, a football legend.”

As the decisive match approaches, Yamal emphasized unity and commitment within the squad, stressing that effort will not be in question regardless of the final result. He made clear that the team is determined to fight until the last whistle, promising supporters that intensity and pride will define their performance.

Whether Barcelona can replicate those iconic comeback stories against Atletico Madrid remains uncertain, but the mindset inside the dressing room is clear: history is being studied as motivation.

The stage is set for another dramatic European night where emotion, legacy, and performance collide under the pressure of the Champions League spotlight.
