The dismantling of the Mets continues: Mark Vientos, another player who could leave

New York Mets fans are living a nightmare end to the year. In the final weeks of 2025, they are receiving nothing but news about departures and none about big signings. The worst thing for their cause is that the farewells of some players continue. Another player who could leave this offseason is Mark Vientos.

David Stearns, the Mets’ president of operations, is betting on maintaining the trade policy based on getting rid of players and waiting until the last minute for star signings. It is a very risky vision, because the team needs to cover specific areas that so far do not even have candidates in the portfolio.

Jorge Castillo of ESPN reported that the New York franchise is willing to listen to trade offers for third baseman Mark Vientos. One of the reasons why Stearns would make him available is that he did not live up to the expectations placed on him after an excellent 2024 campaign. According to Castillo, he failed to maintain the same level of performance in the 2025 season.

The other options for first base and designated hitter are Jeff McNeil and Mark Vientos. However, the Mets have informed other teams that both players are available for trades, rival executives told ESPN

In the 2024 campaign, Vientos posted an offensive line of .266/.322/.516 in 11 games, with 27 home runs and an OPS+ of 134. This season he batted .233/.289/.413 with 17 home runs and an OPS+ of 97 in 121 appearances.

Despite his ability to perform at both corners of the infield, he is a below-average defender. He will remain under team control until 2029 and will be eligible for arbitration after next season.

Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuna, other Mets players available

Journalistic reports in recent hours indicate that the New York organization is also considering the trades of Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuna. It has been revealed that the board wants Brett Baty to be an everyday player.

Those three players seem redundant on the Mets’ roster. New York appears willing to give Brett Baty every opportunity to cement himself at third base after a solid defensive season and a .748 OPS that translated into 2.3 fWAR

Fans of the team are struggling to understand what David Stearns is doing. They are hurt by the departures of Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo. They are also upset about the departures of Jonah Tong, their young pitcher, and Mark Vientos. With the trade deadline looming, they are concerned that the franchise is not signing the top-level players that are urgently needed to plan for next season.
