Tarik Skubal wants nothing to do with the New York Yankees as Brian Cashman’s dream fades

The New York Yankees had high hopes and expectations, as is tradition, for the 2025 MLB season. A year after falling in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees easily made it to the postseason. But this time around, they did it as a Wild Card team, with the Toronto Blue Jays taking the division crown in the AL East.

Despite many feeling the Yankees had too many flaws, they made it to the ALDS, but it was the Blue Jays who ended their season. As soon as Toronto won Game 4, New York GM Brian Cashman turned his attention to the offseason. The Yankees need to make moves in order to stay near the top of the American League. That means exploring the trade market, and Tarik Skubal has been a common name in trade rumors with a link to the Yankees.

The Detroit Tigers ace is technically under contract for the 2026 season, but following two straight jaw-dropping seasons, the 2024 Cy Young winner is looking to get paid handsomely this offseason. With the Tigers not generally being massive spenders, that had Skubal’s name coming up in trade rumors ever since the summer.

Tarik Skubal wants to stay with the Detroit Tigers in 2026 and beyond

New York doesn’t have a major need at starting pitcher. In fact, the Yankees already might have the best rotation in baseball. But adding a player like Skubal has the potential to turn any contender into the flat-out favorite. Unfortunately, the Skubal dream for the Yankees is over before it could even take off. That’s because Skubal doesn’t want to go anywhere outside of Detroit.

MLB insider Jeff Passan reported on The Rich Eisen Show on Friday that the Tigers are obviously hoping to re-sign Skubal. But more importantly, Skubal is more than open to re-signing with the ball club.

Skubal apparently “really likes it there“, particularly because of the coaching staff. He also has an affinity for the organization that gave him his start in the big leagues and the right support system once he got there.
