Serena Williams’ latest move keeps door open for tennis return at age 44

Serena Williams, one of the most iconic figures in tennis history, has quietly taken a significant step that could reopen the door to professional competition.

After stepping away from the sport following the 2022 U.S. Open, Williams described her departure as an “evolution” away from tennis rather than a formal retirement.

At the time, she requested to be removed from the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) International Registered Testing Pool, a move that exempted her from random drug testing while she stepped back from competition.

On Tuesday, tennis insider Ben Rothenberg reported that Williams has officially applied to re-enter the ITIA testing pool. This administrative action is required for any former player hoping to regain eligibility for competitive play.

By rejoining the pool, Williams subjects herself once again to the rigorous out-of-competition testing and daily whereabouts requirements that all active players must follow.

Williams submitted her application in October 2025, meaning that she must complete six months in the pool before her name could appear on the list of reinstated players. This timeline makes April 2026 the earliest possible date she could officially return to the professional circuit.

It’s important to note that this procedural move does not necessarily indicate a comeback, but simply keeps the door open for potential participation. As ITIA representative Adrian Bassett explained to The Athletic, “All I can say is she’s back in the pool and therefore subject to whereabouts.”

Possible comeback in doubles?

Speculation is high that Williams could seek a return through doubles play, possibly alongside her sister Venus, who remains active on the tour. The sisters last played together at the 2022 U.S. Open, and the 2026 edition could be an ideal opportunity for a reunion in women’s or mixed doubles.

Given her age of 44 and the physical demands of singles competition, a doubles appearance would provide a more manageable route back onto the court while allowing fans to see the legendary duo in action once more.

Williams‘ career record is nothing short of extraordinary. She retired with 23 major singles titles, the most in the Open Era at the time, though Novak Djokovic has since surpassed her with 24.

While a singles comeback seems unlikely, there is always the tantalizing possibility that she could attempt to capture that elusive 24th major.

For now, Williams‘ re-entry into the ITIA testing pool represents a procedural step. It keeps her eligible and keeps the idea of a comeback alive, even if no formal announcement has been made.

Tennis fans will be watching closely over the coming months to see if one of the sport’s greatest ever champions will once again grace the court.
