Even retired tennis superstar Serena Williams knows how to keep the tennis world talking.
Recently, the 44-year-old took a procedural step by re-entering the sport’s anti-doping testing pool, immediately sparking a wave of speculation about a potential comeback in 2026.
Williams quickly tried to quell the excitement, posting on social media, “Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.” Yet, the move itself keeps the door slightly ajar for a future return, leaving fans and pundits buzzing.

Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena‘s former coach who guided her to ten of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, offered his perspective in an interview with Express.
While he described some of the speculation as exaggerated, he acknowledged that the idea of a comeback may have crossed Williams’ mind.
“She’s in amazing shape, as everyone has seen,” Mouratoglou explained.
“She looks like she’s back to being a top athlete after being a mother. If she thinks about returning, it would only be if she felt she could compete with the best – otherwise, she won’t. That’s never been her mindset.”
Mouratoglou emphasized that any decision would depend as much on her competitive drive as her physical readiness, highlighting the legendary athlete’s high standards and relentless focus on excellence.
Serena Williams’ sister Venus was also asked about a possible doubles reunion in 2026. She downplayed the likelihood, noting, “I can’t get her on the court. She doesn’t practice, so it seems very unlikely.”
An ITIA spokesperson clarified that rejoining the testing pool can be purely administrative, simply “giving herself the option” to compete, without necessarily signaling an imminent return.
Whether Serena chooses to step back on the court remains uncertain.
