Sabalenka on transgender people: “It’s not fair for women to face biological men”

Aryna Sabalenka is convinced that transgender women have an advantage over biological women, which is why she does not agree with their participation in sport. The world number one gave her opinion when asked about it on a podcast with Nick Kyrgios ahead of the Battle of the Sexes on December 28.

“It’s a tough question and I have nothing against them, but I feel they would have a big advantage over the rest and I don’t think it’s fair for women to compete against biological men. It’s not fair for a woman to have been working all her life to get to the limit and then have to face a man who is biologically much stronger. I don’t agree with this in sport,” said Sabalenka.Kyrgios, her opponent in the match in Dubai, agreed with her and added: “She hit the nail on the head”.

According to current WTA rules, a transgender woman can compete on the circuit if she has declared her gender as female for a minimum of four years and if she has lowered her testosterone levels below a certain threshold in the last two years.

The Battle of the Sexes

Sabalenka, current world number one and four-time Grand Slam champion, and Kyrgios, who played only five matches in 2025 due to injury, will meet on December 28 in one of the few occasions in history that a male and female tennis player have faced each other in an exhibition match.

The match will be played as a best-of-three set match, with a ‘super tie break’ if it goes to a third set and each player will only have one serve, in order to minimise the impact of Kyrgios’ serve. In addition, Sabalenka’s side of the court will be smaller.
