It was not the type of 2025 Ryder Cup that Team USA was expecting this time around. Taking place in New York, the United States had the home field advantage, looking to get revenge for the 2023 edition of the tournament. Instead, Team Europe came out on top and controversy surfaced.
The American fans in attendance did not behave in a cordial way, prompting heavy criticism from European players and golf purists around the world. Rory McIlroy was at the center of it all, and it’s clear that this could lead to animosity going forward, especially since McIlroy plays tournaments in the United States nearly every weekend.

McIlroy has never been shy to be outspoken about things that bother him throughout his career, and this was no exception. Following Team Europe’s win, McIlroy didn’t hold back and fully addressed the situation, which seemed to really affect him and his teammates.
What happened here this week is not acceptable. I don’t think we should ever accept that in golf. I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week. Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons. It teaches you etiquette. It teaches you how to play by the rules. It teaches you how to respect people. Sometimes this week we didn’t see that.
McIlroy’s teammate, Shane Lowry, revealed that Erica McIlroy, Rory’s wife, was subject to verbal abuse while in the crowd supporting her husband. It was not a good look for the American fans and the European players didn’t stay silent in the matter.
President Donald Trump actually seemed to handle the situation better than the fans. Despite McIlroy and his teammates calling Trump out in a playful video, he congratulated McIlroy and Team Europe for winning the Ryder Cup.
