The connection between Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers grows, and the Indiana star gives her the recognition she deserves

For a national team to achieve complete chemistry, just like professional teams, it requires time for players to fully understand each other’s movements on the court. Gradually, they begin to anticipate where and how a teammate will move, and the ball eventually returns to that exact spot almost instinctively.

That is how a squad begins to look cohesive and connected. It is something that was not fully visible yet with Team USA in this game, although as the matches continue, the situation will probably start to look completely different.

However, despite the victory by the WNBA players representing the United States over Puerto Rico, there was a major positive takeaway that left fans extremely pleased and excited: the promising connection that appears to be forming between Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers.

Caitlin Clark describes Paige Bueckers as “clunky”

Dallas Wings player Paige Bueckers led the team representing the Stars and Stripes, although her Indiana Fever teammate Caitlin Clark described the performance as “clunky” during their first game in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

I thought the game was a little clunky; we probably didn’t play our best. I thought Paige played really well. But it felt good! I mean, I obviously didn’t shoot it as well as I probably would have liked. I think their zone kind of threw us off, and it slowed down our pace a little bit. We didn’t get as much in transition.

Clark said while speaking to reporters after the game.

Bueckers finished as the player with the most points on the floor against the Puerto Rican squad, even though at times the team did not appear to be perfectly synchronized.

  • 16 points
  • 3 assists

Those were Paige’s final statistics, and it is worth noting that she delivered the best scoring performance among all players involved in the matchup.

Little by little, the team is expected to show greater understanding between the players. For now, head coach Kara Lawson continues working to identify the most effective lineup so that group can receive the majority of the minutes on the court.

It is important to remember that most of the players on this roster are very young, although that does not prevent them from displaying their impressive talent whenever they have the basketball in their hands. They are the athletes currently pursuing a place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

A strong connection between Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese

Another aspect that generated very positive impressions was the growing chemistry between Chicago Sky player Angel Reese and Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers.

Between the two players, there appears to be a natural understanding that will almost certainly continue strengthening as they spend more minutes playing together, something that could become extremely beneficial for the national team.

In this first matchup against Puerto Rico, Reese posted the following numbers:

  • 10 points
  • 13 rebounds

Meanwhile, things did not go as well for Clark as many had expected. She will need to improve significantly during her time on the court. Likely, the long stretch she spent away from competition because of injuries had an impact on her rhythm and performance during this game.
